ROCK APES OF VIETNAM: THE JUNGLE LEGEND OF THE VIETNAM WAR

Thousands of Soldiers were placed in the most difficult environments that most people can never imagine during the Vietnam War. The jungles where they were stationed teemed with wildlife they had never encountered before.
Soldiers from the United States, Australia, and South Vietnam had to adapt quickly to the unfamiliar jungle while fighting an enemy that was very much at home and used their environment to their advantage.
With the Soldiers unfamiliar with the terrain, seeing strange things was common back then, to the point that they even saw things that weren’t there. They encountered large, ape-like creatures moving through the jungle in groups, who threw rocks at them. These were called the Rock Apes of Vietnam, a term that, to this day, remains strange to Veterans and historians.
Who Was Throwing Rocks at the Soldiers?
Many military operations during the Vietnam War took place in the dense jungle regions, such as the Central Highlands and the coastal mountains near Da Nang. There was thick vegetation that made enemies hide more quickly, move quietly, and made it difficult to patrol.
American and allied Soldiers are trained to expect sudden ambushes, so they are always prepared for anything that comes their way. However, Soldiers sometimes reported that rocks were falling or being thrown near their positions. They assumed that it was usually the Viet Cong who were nearby whenever rocks landed near their area.
The strange thing with the situation is that the Soldiers patrolling did not find any Viet Cong when they searched the area.
Soldiers even claimed to have seen large animals moving through the trees shortly after rocks were thrown. According to them, the creatures were covered in hair and appeared larger than the monkeys commonly seen in the area. At that time, they believed that these creatures were defending their territory.
What Were the Rock Apes?
The Soldiers claimed they saw mysterious, ape-like creatures with monkey-like features. The “creatures” were then called “Rock Apes.” The name came from the encounters the Soldiers had, which involved throwing rocks.
Soldiers said that these creatures sometimes made loud screaming, even barking sounds. They moved quickly through the jungle. There are different reports on how these creatures look. Some say they are larger than typical monkeys and have dark hair covering their bodies.
The location most often associated with the Vietnam Rock Apes is Monkey Mountain, near Da Nang. With the name of the mountain, you’d expect that the Rock Apes would be one of the species of monkeys there. But up to this date, there is no scientific evidence to prove their existence.
The Viet Congs Tried to Capture the Rock Apes
The Soldiers had no idea what this could be at the time. No one really knew where the rocks came from or who was throwing them. Was it the Viet Congs, the monkeys? Or was it just purely an imagination?
Surprisingly, it’s not only the American and allied Soldiers who encountered the Rock Apes of Vietnam. The Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Soldiers have reported sighting them, too. They even carried out a plan to find the Rock Apes in 1974 under General Hoang Ming Thao’s command. Their goal was to capture just one to prove that the Rock Apes existed.
They were unsuccessful with this plan, and even a zoologist at Vietnam National University, Professor Võ Quý, tried to find the Rock Apes, but also failed. However, human-like footprints were found in the jungle. This made another professor conduct further observations and tests. Professor Nguyễn Xuân Dũng made efforts to determine whether the Vietnam Rock Apes were real, but he did not produce clear scientific proof from the footprints.
Ultimately, everything just led them to a dead end, and no further evidence proved that the Rock Apes truly existed. It has just become a Vietnam War folklore.

Was It Really the Rock Apes Attacking Them?
If there were no evidence of the Rock Apes of Vietnam, where did the rocks come from? What, or who, were the creatures attacking the Soldiers?
Historians and wildlife experts agreed that the encounters were just misidentified animals. Maybe they were just another species of orangutan, but who knows? Vietnam’s jungles are home to creatures that someone can mistake for other familiar species.
Another factor might have played a part in this. Stress might have affected how the Soldiers interpreted the encounters, which could explain why their natural reaction was to assume they were under attack when rocks were thrown at them.
The Rock Apes of Vietnam remain a war legend to this day, and it’s a reminder of how challenging and unfamiliar the jungles of Vietnam were for the Soldiers who fought there. Ultimately, the jungle proved it can also hold its own kind of mystery, one that even a modern war could never explain.
