U.S. Government Strikes Down on Suspects Leaking Confidential Military Medical Records
Anna Gabrielian (36), an anesthesiologist, and her partner Jamie Lee Henry (39), who was a major and doctor in the U.S. Army, were arrested in September 2022 for allegedly attempting to give the Russian government confidential military medical records that were connected to the U.S. government and American Armed Forces.
Their efforts to support Russia in a war against a nation that’s trying to establish its identity and belonging on the global landscape is pure betrayal. Some have even argued that their actions are treasonous and they should be punished to the highest degree.
How Do We Define Treason?
When we think of the events that unfolded and the destruction that their plan could have caused, we have to assess each step and evaluate their motives and end goal.
This case has left people wondering if their actions were legally treasonous. To answer this, we also have to ask the question, “What is the definition of treason?” Treason is the “offense of attempting to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance.”
When we break down the actions that Anna Gabrielian and Jamie Lee Henry committed and dissect their intentions, it could easily point to treason, especially if the investigation determines that their motives were to cause harm to the U.S. government and the citizens of Ukraine.
Looking at how the events unfolded, many ask, “What is the punishment for treason?” In most cases, committing treasonous acts could result in imprisonment for a minimum of ten years (and a maximum of 99 years or life) with an additional hefty fine of no less than $10,000.
Why Were They So Determined To Help Russia?
Around July and August 2022, Gabrielian and Henry met up with an individual whom they believed to work for the Russian government. This person was, in fact, an undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation agent posing as a Russian embassy employee, and they met up with this person frequently to discuss their plans to support the Russian government.
Gabrielian and Henry were both determined to help Russia in their fight against Ukraine. Each had different reasons; Gabrielian was motivated by patriotism toward Russia and felt compelled to provide assistance in any way possible, even if it meant risking being sent to jail. Henry, on the other hand, looked into volunteering to join the Russian Army after the conflict with Ukraine began. Unfortunately, she didn’t have the necessary combat experience. Therefore, Henry turned to resources that she had access to in order to achieve her goal, which included some highly classified information.
Because Henry wasn’t qualified to participate in the Russian military, she wanted to prove her worth and loyalty by leaking military medical records that she had exclusive access to.
In their efforts to help the Russian government, a key point on why Gabrielian and Henry were so determined to help Russia was because they wanted to assist in curing Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to unconfirmed sources, Putin reportedly suffers from schizoaffective disorder, a condition where symptoms of both psychotic and mood disorders are present together in one episode, and a mild case of Parkinson’s disease. These same sources also cite that he experiences symptoms of schizophrenia, which include hallucinations and mania.
With the health conditions that Putin reportedly has, Gabrielian and Henry wanted to leak military medical records to the Russian government so that the Russians could find a way to help cure Putin’s health complications. This would potentially negatively affect Ukraine because, with the loyalty of Gabrielian and Henry, having a healthy Putin could turn the tide of the war.
As for their staunch allegiance to Russia, sources and investigations have yet to point to any confirmed motivations for their actions.
Gabrielian & Henry Plan Thickens With More Leaked Information
They both suggested providing the undercover agent with medical information from members of the U.S. military and their families from Fort Bragg, which is the largest military post in the United States and also where Henry was put on duty as a staff internist.
Gabrielian told the undercover agent that because Henry was a military officer, she (Henry) was more of an important source for Russia due to her access to more useful information. In August 2022, Henry provided the undercover agent with military medical records of a U.S. military officer, a Department of Defense employee, and the spouses of three Army Veterans, two of which are deceased.
Some of this information included how the U.S. military establishes an Army hospital in war conditions and information about previous training provided by the United States military to Ukrainian military personnel.
Gabrielian additionally made secret plans to provide medical information about a spouse of a government employee and military Veteran to the Russian representatives. She then secretly made plans for her and Henry, with their children, to flee to Turkey.
Just when you thought she stopped, she didn’t. She continued leaking more military medical records of two individuals, which included the spouse of an employee of the Office of Naval Intelligence, who she pointed out had a medical condition that Russia could exploit. Henry also apparently leaked the information of five individuals who were Veterans or related to Veterans.
With these actions taking place, Gabrielian and Henry both face serious time in jail for their plot against the American government and military personnel.
What’s Their Punishment?
After their initial appearances in court, where their case was preliminarily evaluated by a board of judges, both Gabrielian and Henry were released on home detention with locational monitoring, and Gabrielian was also released on a $500,000 bond.
The courts will spend the next five months evaluating evidence, listening to testimonies, and deciding upon a just punishment in this grand plot against the U.S. and Ukrainian governments. If convicted, they could face a maximum sentence of 5 years in federal prison for the count of conspiracy and a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison for each count of disclosing military medical records.
If you think about the number of people whose private records these two collectively leaked to the Russian government, they could end up facing more than 50 years in federal prison.
They’ll be back in court in the coming weeks to determine their fate and where they end up following this treasonous plot.
What Lies Ahead?
Continuing with the case of the United States vs. Anna Gabrielian and Jamie Lee Henry in this Fort Bragg scandal, the U.S. government will likely create more secure ways to keep their military medical records safe and will be more cautious about who has access to these confidential files.
