Key Transition Milestones
12 Months Out
Begin TAP (mandatory under 10 U.S.C. § 1144). Start building your civilian resume, researching careers, and networking. Look into SkillBridge opportunities if your command supports it. Begin building an emergency fund covering 3-6 months of expenses.
180 Days Out
File your BDD (Benefits Delivery at Discharge) VA disability claim. Request copies of your complete Service Treatment Records. Begin the SGLI-to-VGLI conversion process. Create a post-military budget accounting for changes in housing, healthcare, and taxes.
90 Days Out
Register for VA healthcare. Secure post-separation housing. Finalize your TSP strategy (leave in place, roll over, or partial distribution). Update legal documents including will, power of attorney, and beneficiary designations.
