Sanders Opposes Unconditional Aid to Israel
On February 7th, a motion for legislation providing the Israeli government with $10 billion in military aid was brought before the court. However, Senator Sanders voted 'no' to the precedence.Regarding his 'no' vote Sanders has said, “Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas’ terrorism, but it does not have the right to go to war against the entire Palestinian people.”
Does Bernie Sanders Support Israel?
If you're wondering about Bernie Sanders' Israel stance, he continued his statement with, "Over 1.7 million people have been driven from their homes and have no idea as to where they will be in the future. And today, hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children are literally starving to death because Netanyahu's right-wing government is preventing desperately needed food and water from getting into Gaza."Bernie Sanders' Gaza stance has also been quite clear. He recently brought up the fact that if we did send the 10 billion dollars in relief aid, we would contribute to the ending of the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency. The agency operates in Gaza and across the Middle East. The Biden administration and other Western governments are suspending their contributions. This is due to claims of Israeli allegations against the agency's employees.Related read: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Already Apologizing for Weird Super Bowl Ad
Senate Votes Down Sanders' Legislation, His Response
Sanders also discussed that the 10 billion dollar deal would actually provide more U.S. military aid for Netanyahu. Bernie said that this bill, “...continues the horrific war against the Palestinian people, that is unconscionable and that is why I will be voting 'no'.”Bernie made this statement right before the members of the U.S. senate began voting. This bill included military aid to Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan. This was in addition to a bipartisan border deal that rights groups are calling, "an unacceptable attack on asylum rights.”Many Senate and House of Republicans voted 'no' to the border agreement in honor of former President Trump. They did this because it isn't a good enough crackdown on immigration issues in the United States. It looks like the bill will not pass either chamber due to the GOP.Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is planning to force a vote to separate the legislation. It will only include the military assistance for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan. Bernie Sanders' Israel stance has shown his expression for opposition in supporting their military. However, Bernie Sanders' Israel Gaza foreign aid supplement is in the works. He said he would introduce an amendment to, “ensure zero funding for the continuation of Netanyahu's illegal, immoral war against the Palestinian people.” It is clear to see Senator Sanders viewpoint on the aid, and the war as a whole.Suggested read: Bidens Law Paves the Way to Raise Military Pay in 2024
