THE ALABAMA AIR NATIONAL GUARD IS THE HOME BASE FOR F-35S

Since its establishment on January 21, 1922, the Alabama Air National Guard (AL ANG) has maintained a storied history of defending not only the Yellowhammer State but our country as a whole. While they have made great contributions to our nation in the past, their future is also bright as the Alabama Air National Guard continues to evolve with the future of American aviation. What Is the Alabama Air National Guard?

Acting as a militia for aerial combat in the Yellowhammer State, the Alabama Air National Guard works with the Alabama Army National Guard to serve its citizens whenever needed. When federalized, AL ANG falls under the U.S. Air Force (USAF) and receives orders from the President of the United States. Otherwise, they receive commands from the Governor of Alabama through the office of the Alabama Adjutant General. Headquartered in Montgomery, everything from self-defense to humanitarian efforts falls under the functions of the force. There are notable units comprising of the AL ANG, such as the 117th Air Refueling Wing, the 187th Fighter Wing, and the 226th Combat Communications Group.

The 187th Fighter Wing Is the Official Home Base of the F-35A Lighting II

F-35A Lighting II stealth fighter jets are known far and wide for their technological advances in aviation. The aerospace wonder continues to serve American interests and will be a mainstay for the foreseeable future. In February 2024, the Alabama National Guard proved that its pilots were up to the task of utilizing the aircraft. The home base of the F-35A Lightning II held a flight show and ceremony to prove their preparedness. After passing an environmental analysis, the 187th Fighter Wing received multiple jets and is set to receive more over time as it replaces the F-16. The ceremony didn’t just showcase F-35s, they also wanted to honor the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, aka the Red Tails. It took years to accomplish but the Red Tails legacy and future of aviation were on full display. In total, the Air National Guard in Alabama will receive 20 F-35s for the 187th Fighter Wing. Three were delivered in December 2023 and it already has two it’s loaning from Vermont’s Air Guard. However, 17 more are on their way and will be delivered brand new. Upgrades Helping Alabama Air National Guard Carry the Legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen

Despite untold racial barriers, the Tuskegee Airmen led many different successful bombing campaigns in World War II. This legacy is a reminder of the sacrifices our freedom continues to demand. Having F-35s is ensuring that the AL ANG is ready for the present and future of aerial warfare. Not losing sight of the Red Tails and their dedication, is a timeless notion at the heart of the unit's preparation. New technology for the AL ANG is always important. Innovation is a part of the key to America’s successful military. But maintaining the high standards and honoring the legacies of the past is what makes the Alabama Air National Guard and the U.S. military as a whole special.
