Even though the movie has a lot of fictional stories, it's still regarded as a timeless classic depicting the lives of American Soldiers during World War II.The former Chief of Military History, Colonel Kevin Farrell, even noted that the film's D-Day sequence had captured perfectly the sense of confusion and chaos of combat.
