Today's internet is full of memes, but nothing is compared to the relatable ones, just like the good old Marine memes. So, if you're ready for a good old laugh, you better sit back and scroll down for a moment of fun.

History of the Word "Meme"

Originally, the word meme had a different spelling - it used to be "meem," and it was first published in the 1976 book The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins. According to the book, it was referred to as "Mimeme," derived from the Greek word which means "that which is imitated." It was then shortened to what is known today as "meme." The first viral meme on the internet was the dancing baby. It spread like wildfire until it appeared in one of the episodes of Ally McBeal. This was created by the graphic designer Michael Girard, who wanted to show how movements can be programmed through computers. Thus, he created the final design of a baby demonstrating those movements, and then his employer sent it out to the developers to parade the capabilities of their software. One of the demos reached the inbox of one of the LucasArts employees, who made it into a GIF and shared it in forums and emails, making it a sensational meme. Now, anyone can create a meme because they are within reach; you can also just put words into photos to make it more hilarious. Here are some hilarious Marine memes sure to make you laugh.
