Flag Day 2024: A Celebration of American Heritage

No one really knows the original creator and designer of the flag; some say it's Betsy Ross. However, one leading theory is that Francis Hopkinson had created the original one. He was one of the 56 people to sign the Declaration of Independence. One remaining proof is when Congress received a bill for designing the American Flag, but it doesn't include descriptions, sketches, or an official image, so this theory is still a mystery. This Flag Day 2024, learn more about how to treat the flag and ways to celebrate this special occasion.

Short History of the Happy Flag Day

When a nation celebrates Flag Day, it's like accepting it as the country's significant symbol. It represents more than just unifying the nation; it also highlights the strife, struggle, bloodshed, and battles of all the people involved in creating a great country. Like the American flag, it represents freedom, comfort, bravery, and hope. Before going full blast and celebrating Happy Flag Day, it is helpful to understand what the stripes and stars mean. The flag's current design has 13 alternating red and white stripes, which represent the 13 British colonies that fought for independence. White symbolizes innocence and purity, red represents valor and bravery, and blue represents justice and perseverance. The part where it has changed over time is the stars. Initially, it had 13 representing the colonies and was laid out in alternating rows. In January 1794, the number of stars increased to 15; it became 48 in July 1912. 1958 came, and a boy named Bob Heft designed the 50-star American flag. It was just a history assignment during his junior year. He suspected that two more states would be added, and he was right since Alaska and Hawaii became official states the following year.

A Civilian's Guide to Flag Day 2024

Before handling your flag, you need to know the do's and don'ts, as there is a US Flag Code. It is a way to show respect for the country, the flag, and its purposes. Here is the lowdown on how the flag should be handled.

  • Nothing should be beneath it when displayed; it should stand tall and not folded up, adorned, or drawn back.
  • The code forbids using Old Glory in apparel, window drapes, or beddings.
  • You should not fly other flags higher than the American Flag.
  • The flag should not touch the ground; if it does, it should be cleaned and cared for correctly.
  • During a procession or parade, it should be on the marching right or the front center.
  • It should not be used for advertising or printed materials that will be discharged after use.
  • When the flag is no longer fit for display, it should be disposed of dignifiedly, preferably by burning.

Things to Remember When Displaying Your Flag

  • In the open, you can display the flag 24 hours a day, provided it is well-lighted at night.
  • The U.S. flag is at the observer’s left when flags are displayed in a row. If other nations are included, they should be of the same height. Local and state flags should be lower.
  • The flag may be flown at half during the special day, just like on Memorial Day. It will then be raised at noon.
  • If displayed over the middle of the street on this Flag Day 2024, it should be suspended vertically. While on a podium, it should be placed to the speaker’s right and other flags to the left.
  • When displayed on the window, it should be in the same way as the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street. If placed on the car, the staff should firmly attach the chassis or secure it to the right fender.
  • The union is at the head and over the left shoulder if used to cover a casket. Plus, the flag should not touch the ground.

Properly Disposing the Flag

  • Never wrap it up; instead, fold it in a traditional triangle.
  • Throw it in the big fire. Individuals should salute, recite the Pledge of Allegiance, and observe a moment of silence. Once consumed, put out the fire. Collect the ashes and bury them.
  • Lastly, make sure to check your town's guidelines for fire ordinances.
