Happy Birthday America: Celebrating 250 Years of Freedom

Every year, we gather to celebrate the Fourth of July, but why? Is it really the best date to commemorate the birth of our nation? Considering the date’s historic ties to the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, calling for a celebration is more than appropriate. Read on to learn more about our nation’s origins and how to say "Happy Birthday, America" in style.
Is the 4th of July America’s Birthday?
Yes! It is generally accepted that America’s birthday is July 4, 1776.
This date marks American independence, though before the United States formally broke ties with England, the colonies were still working out how to form new territories and alliances. Working under a government where they did not feel represented spurred a revolution, which officially began on April 19, 1775.
Today, we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th as the official birthday of the United States because it is the exact date the Second Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence.
How to Celebrate America’s Birthday
Despite its flaws, our nation deserves a celebration worthy of the privileges and freedoms it affords us. Here is how to say “Happy Birthday, America” like a true patriot:
- Throw a BBQ or Cookout: After nearly two and a half centuries of freedom, many argue that the food is the best part of the 4th. Whether you are technically barbecuing (low and slow in a smoker) or grilling (hot and fast over open flames), outdoor cooking is an American tradition. If you have a smoker, challenge yourself with a brisket or try pulled pork for a succulent, easier approach. If you are grilling, fresh veggies, chicken, burgers, and hot dogs are perfect. While you wait for the food, brave the heat with some football or frisbee—just be sure to stay hydrated!
- Head Out to a Parade: Chances are, you’ll find a 4th of July parade near you. Parades are a fantastic way to show patriotism and connect with your community. Dressing up in red, white, and blue attire is a must, and if you want to take it to the next level, go in full historical costume. Waving Old Glory while watching patriotic floats go by is a perfect way to collectively wish America a happy birthday.
- Enjoy a Fireworks Show: No matter your age, watching fireworks never gets old. However, operating pyrotechnics at home can be a recipe for disaster—especially when alcohol is involved. Since the 4th is a great time to throw back a cold drink, it is often best to let the professionals handle the explosives. Many towns and cities offer spectacular local shows that will keep you in awe and out of the ER. Get out early, find a good seat, and enjoy the spectacle without the risk.
- Give Back to the Military Community: Our freedoms wouldn’t exist if not for those who have served and those who continue to do so. Giving back to a military-focused charity is a deeply meaningful way to show patriotism. You don't just have to donate money; donating your time by volunteering at local events is highly impactful. You can also give back simply by checking in on veterans and active-duty families in your neighborhood. Fix them a plate, invite them over, and be a good neighbor.
