Happy Birthday America: Celebrating 248 Years of Freedom

Every year, we gather to celebrate the Fourth of July, but why? Is it really the best date to commemorate the birth of our nation? Considering the date’s ties to implementing the Constitution, calling for a celebration is more than appropriate. Learn more about our nation’s origins and how to say "Happy Birthday America" in style.

Is the 4th of July America’s Birthday?

Yes, it’s generally accepted that America’s birthday is on the 4th of July, and it has been that way since 1776. This is the date that marked American independence but before the United States formally told England how it was, the colonies were still working towards forming new nations and territories. As is no surprise, working for a government and not feeling represented would spur a revolution, which we saw begin on April 19, 1775. Today, we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th as the official birthday of the United States because this is the date on which the Second Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence.

How to Celebrate America’s Birthday

We’ve made Independence Day America's birthday and despite its flaws, our nation deserves a celebration worthy of the privileges and freedoms it affords us. Here’s how to say “Happy Birthday America” like a true patriot:

Throw a BBQ

Besides the nearly two and a half centuries of freedom, many argue that barbecue is the biggest part of the 4th. Simply put, this is a celebration. BBQing is an American tradition that provides a great way to spend time with friends and family while eating mouthwatering dishes. For the sake of semantics, we’re going to include grilling here, which is different than BBQ. Either way, a nice char, open flames, and a kiss of smoke will do regardless of your method. If you have a smoker, prepare ahead and try brisket for a challenge or pulled pork for an easier, succulent approach. If you are grilling, fresh veggies, chicken, burgers, and hot dogs are great complements to any party. While you wait for the food or if you’re looking to burn off a few calories afterward, brave the heat and play some football, frisbee, etc. Just be sure to stay hydrated.

Head Out to a Parade

Chances are, you’ll find a 4th of July parade near you. They are a great way to show patriotism while marking the occasion. Dressing up in red, white, and blue attire is a must. If you want to take it to the next level, you can go in full costume. Waving Old Glory while patriotic floats parade the streets is a great way to spend time with your community. It's also a way to collectively wish a Happy Birthday to America.

Enjoy a Fireworks Show

No matter your age, watching fireworks is one of those things that just never seems to get old. However, operating fireworks can be a recipe for disaster, particularly, when there are larger pyrotechnics plus alcohol. It’s no secret that the 4th is a great time to throw back a beer or two. However, this along with the already inherited nature of danger with fireworks, can often mean it’s best to let the professionals handle them. During fireworks season, there is an uptick in injuries but thankfully, many towns and cities offer spectacular fireworks shows that keep you in awe and out of the ER. So, whether you’re sober or not, leave the fireworks to the pros, get out early, and wish America a Happy Birthday without the risk.

Give Back to the Military Community

Celebrating Independence Day can come in many forms but our freedoms wouldn’t be if not for those who have served and those who continue to do so. Giving back to a charity focused on the military is an underrated way to show patriotism on the 4th. Even if you aren’t donating money, there are several events that may need volunteers. Thus, donating your time can be beneficial. Furthermore, you can give back simply by checking in on Veterans and active-duty families. Fix them a plate, invite them over to celebrate, and simply be a good neighbor while we all gather to wish a Happy Birthday to America.

Counting Down to America’s 250th Birthday

Milestones are important and America’s 250th birthday is going to be a big one. However, this won’t occur until July 4, 2026. Until then, we still have plenty to celebrate with red, white, and blue festivities found far and wide. Happy Birthday America! Thank you to those who have made this country possible along with those who continue to serve in the U.S. military. Suggested reads:
