8 Christmas War Movies To Watch This Season

A Christmas war movie might not be the immediate go-to for Christmas movie fans, but these movies are still great for ringing in the holiday season! There are tons of streaming services you can go to for a good war Christmas movie. To make your searches a little easier, we’ve listed some of the best Christmas movies on each platform.

War Christmas Movies on Netflix

Here are some of the greatest Christmas movies on Netflix!

1. White Christmas

White Christmas, directed by Michael Curtis in 1954, is one of the best old Christmas movies out there and one of the best war Christmas movies! Starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Vera-Ellen, and Dean Jagger, this movie-musical is a classic WWII Christmas movie. The four main characters, played by Crosby, Kaye, Clooney, and Vera-Ellen, are musical performers who travel to Vermont. In Vermont, Crosby and Kaye find their old Major General penniless and running the hotel they’re staying at. The four of them embark on a mission to bring some holiday cheer (and money) to the Major General. White Christmas is a classic Christmas war movie.

2. Operation Christmas Drop

Operation Christmas Drop is pretty cheesy (like all of the Hallmark Christmas movies 2022), but it’s still a war Christmas movie! The premise is that a congresswoman is looking for excuses to cut budgets, and her goal is to stop the Air Force from “wasting” money on Operation Christmas Drop. Her congressional aide, Erika Miller (Kat Graham), is sent to “Guam” to investigate Operation Christmas Drop. She’s responsible for digging up dirt on the Christmas Drop, but instead of dirt, she (of course) finds love in Captain Andrew Jantz (Alexander Ludwig), the man in charge of Operation Christmas Drop. Though this is technically a war movie, it’s pretty corny and not for everyone. However, if you’re a fan of the cheese, this is one of the best Christmas war movies for you!

War Christmas Movies on Hulu

While there are tons of Hulu Christmas movies, there aren’t that many Christmas war movies on Hulu. But there’s at least one great pick!

3. A Christmas Hero

Another Hallmark-esque Christmas movie, and one of the new Christmas movies involving war, A Christmas Hero stars Lauren Rys Martin and Michael Welch (Mike from Twilight). Michael Welch plays an Afghanistan Veteran trying to transition back into civilian life. Struggling with PTSD, he is visited by his guardian angel who teaches him how to enjoy life again. This film is definitely one to watch if you’re into war heroes and Christmas!

War Christmas Movies on HBO Max

While there are a lot of war movies on HBO Max, there aren’t many that are also Christmas war movies. Despite that, there are still some options available!

4. Arthur Christmas

Though Arthur Christmas isn’t a total war movie, it does still have some war themes… sort of. The movie is about how Santa actually manages to deliver presents to every single person across the world on Christmas. The movie depicts Santa and his elves as if they were Soldiers, with Santa being their general. Though not necessarily a war film, Arthur Christmas shows how Santa’s efforts are strategically planned as if Christmas were a battle in a war.

War Christmas Movies on Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime is home to a lot of Christmas movies and war movies.

5. It’s A Wonderful Life

It’s A Wonderful Life is one of the most famous Christmas movies. Though not necessarily a war movie, It’s a Wonderful Life is an incredible film about finding new hope. The movie revolves around George Bailey (played by James Stewart), a depressed banker who contemplates suicide before his guardian angel shows him that life is worth living. The war ties come in as more of George’s character is revealed. He served in WWII as an Air Raid Warden. But the war ties don’t end there. Actor and pilot James Stewart also served in WWII in the Air Force as the first American movie star to enlist in WWII. He enlisted at 33, so he was too old to join in Aviation Cadet training. Instead, he applied for the Air Corps commission. During his service, he used his acting skills and popularity to promote the Air Force and used his flying skills to help train other soldiers. Stewart also became a major and a colonel within four years of service and spent some time in Europe in those positions. It’s a Wonderful Life shows that there is hope after hardships; George Bailey and James Stewart both prove that.

Free Christmas War Movies

Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime are not the only places to watch Christmas war movies. There are several other streaming sites that have war movies available, and many of them are free! All of the following movies are available on the free streaming service Tubi.

6. Joyeux Noël

Joyeux Noël is a war film based around the famous Christmas truce during WWI. The film depicts the story through the perspectives of British, French, and German soldiers. This film is based on a true story. During WWI, approaching Christmas time, many of the battles began to lull due to a lack of munition and men. The week of Christmas, soldiers from all sides of the war began crossing over to exchange holiday greetings with each other. Burials occurred, as well as prisoner swaps and sometimes even caroling. Joyeux Noël depicts one of the few peaceful moments during the bloodiness and horror of WWI.

7. A Midnight Clear

A Midnight Clear is a fictional depiction of the early days leading up to the infamous Battle of the Bulge. It’s about a group of German and American Soldiers who agree to a Christmas truce, but that truce goes south very, very quickly. A suspenseful film, A Midnight Clear is another of the most famous war Christmas movies.

8. Stalag 17

Stalag 17 is a war film about American Soldiers being imprisoned in a WWII German POW camp named Stalag 17. The movie revolves around a specific group of Soldiers who believe that one of their own is an informant. Though it doesn’t have super strong ties to Christmas, this movie takes place during December and has Christmas and holiday themes throughout. These Christmas war movies should definitely be added to your “to watch” list this holiday season. From movies about finding love after war to rekindling hope after losing everything, there’s a movie for everyone here. Happy holidays!
