Can U.S. Ships Defeat the Drones?

Recent events are leading to the use of small, explosive sea drones. Ukraine has been using drones to attack Russian warships in the Black Sea. Recently, the Houthis have been trying to use them off the coast of Yemen.U.S. warships are showing that they are capable of defeating the naval drones. However, the Black Sea drones have been an evolving threat. This likely means that the Houthis will be an evolving threat over time as well.Bradley Martin, a retired U.S. Navy surface warfare Captain said in a recent interview, “What unmanned vessels allow an adversary or a navy to do is put a lot of things in the water that a surface ship has to defend against. That creates a problem.”

Threats at Sea Continue to Emerge and Russia is Unable to Defend

In 2022, Ukraine utilized USVs with explosives to defeat Russia in the black sea fleet. With the help of these attacks, Kyiv was able to open up a corridor in dangerous waters and disable Moscow's warships.Due to this defeat, Gen Ivan Lukashevych said, “ All navies in the world are forced to revise their strategies and adjust to this new type of weapon that has emerged for the first time.” Roughly 1500 miles south of the Black Sea is the Red Sea where U.S. forces on deployment protect international shipping lanes from Houthi missiles and drones. The Houthis have tried to deploy USVs twice in the last month. Both times the U.S. military was able to strike and destroy the drones. There is a chance that these USVs could hit a ship in the water, however, as always, there are ways to prepare and protect.Russia has shown that it can not defend against the sea drone military attacks. Even with machine gun crews aboard their warships. Russia has been caught off guard with the previous attacks. However, the U.S. is more aware and has tactics and procedures in place. One way they have prepared is to out maneuver them. Archer Macy, a U.S. Navy admiral stated that, “If you think you are in a threat area, the first thing you do is you speed the – up and then you zig-zag. Again this is a World War II lesson, there's nothing new here.”American warships in the Red Sea have tools and weaponry at their disposal. They have advanced surveillance, radars, helicopters, and machine guns.
