The 1897 Victorinox Swiss Army Knife
Victorinox, as of today, stands as a global company with five product categories, including their Swiss Army Knives, household and professional knives, watches, travel gear, and fragrances. But, it all started in 1884 inside a cutler's workshop. Karl Elsener opened his first knife cutler's workshop in Ibach-Schwyz with the support of his mother. In 1891, the Association of Swiss Master Cutlers was established, and as a result, Elsener was able to fulfill his first significant supply of soldier's knives to the Swiss army. In 1897, the original Swiss Officer's and Sports knife was patented and sold, with many coining it the "Swiss Army Knife."
Features of the Swiss Army Victorinox Knife
The authentic 1897 Victorinox knife was constructed using eighteen components and featured six tools, including a long blade, short blade, screwdriver, awl, can opener, and corkscrew. It was initially crafted using carbon steel up to 1921 and eventually began using stainless steel for production. After the release of Elsener's iconic tool, dozens of companies started to spawn hundreds of variations inspired by the Swiss Army Knives. The limited-edition replica will provide the exact same tools as the original. It supplies six tools and eighteen components. But what makes the replica so unique, besides its historical and cultural significance, is its improved safety and overall quality of the parts used to craft the knife. It’ll be produced using stainless steel and won't contain the trademark Victorinox Cross & Shield, given the emblem wasn't adopted until 1909. Each limited-edition knife will feature its own sequential numbering and the year 1897. Additionally, it will come decked out in red retro glory, has vulcanized fiber scales, and features classical Elsener Schwyz embossing on the large blade. Lastly, It's merely 0.6 inches in height, 3.6 inches in length, and 2.9 ounces in weight.
