During the 1950 Battle of Chosin Reservoir, surrounded Marines radioed for 60mm mortar rounds using the codename 'Tootsie Roll.' When actual frozen candies arrived instead of ammunition, Marines discovered they could soften them in their mouths and use them as putty to seal cracked vehicle fuel lines. The re-frozen candy provided permanent repairs, allowing Marines to escape the deadly encirclement and reach safety during this desperate Korean War battle.
