Owning a home is a quintessential part of living the American dream. It doesn’t matter if you're living in a mansion worthy of a king or a modest refuge for you and your family; your home is much more than four walls and a roof. Veterans face homelessness at a much higher rate than other Americans, and for National Homeownership Month in June, we’re taking a special look at some of the housing benefits at the disposal of those who have served this country. When Is National Homeownership Month?

June is National Homeownership Month, which was established by President George W. Bush in 2002. It is a natural evolution from the previously celebrated National Homeownership Week instated by the Clinton administration in 1995. The goal of National Homeownership Month is to increase American homeownership across all 50 states. The effects have been long-lasting, and although many experts point to spring as the busiest time with a peak in May for buying and selling homes, there is no absence of action found in the month of June, as it is still one of the busiest times in real estate. Summertime makes for a great opportunity to buy or sell a home. Children being out of school is a major advantage that can make a move, big or small, much more logistically feasible. If you are looking to become a proud Veteran homeowner or already are and may be planning a move, be sure to take advantage of these great tips for finding your next home.

Veteran Benefits for Buying a House

We would be remiss not to take the opportunity to connect Veterans with the resources available to them to become homeowners during National Homeownership Month. There is housing help for Veterans available. Here are some important Veteran homeowner benefits you need to know about:

  • The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) provides many different resources for Veteran homeowners through loans that receive special interest rates and can be applied towards buying, refinancing, or improving a home.
  • Disabled Veterans have additional benefits, including grants that can help install modifications to their home to help them live an independent lifestyle.
  • If you are a homeless Veteran or facing potential homelessness, you can receive assistance from the VA. The services available to Veterans range from housing assistance and legal services to employment services and much more.
  • Older Veterans can also enjoy specific benefits regarding housing, including assisted living help, in-home care, and more.

Veteran homeowner benefits help those who have served their country gain an easier path to homeownership. It is beyond deserved and the least our country can do to provide for those who have sacrificed to keep us safe, secure, and living out the American dream.
