When Regis Philbin took to American television screens to ask us all if we wished to be millionaires, the answer was quite obvious. You don’t have to wish for a lifestyle of luxury or seek excessive greed; simply receiving millionaire status is a goal for many Americans looking for financial security. It appears that for some retired military personnel, this goal is becoming more and more obtainable. Consulting jobs are paying well for retired military members looking to work for foreign governments, but be warned, you may have qualms about where you’ll end up. Jobs for Retired Military Personnel

Retired Army personnel or retired armed forces from any branch of the U.S. military have plenty of options available for employment. One of the many benefits found in a military career is the opportunity to gain and hone skills that can translate into the civilian workplace. Transitioning can be difficult, but with the right guidance and by taking advantage of resources from various non-profit organizations and the VA, you’ll be able to find a job in your desired field. This is further personified by the great diversity found in the U.S. military and the jobs necessary to complete the mission. Members of the military retired from duty develop skills ranging from veterinarian services to security detail to engineering to tech and much more. Some careers may even position retired military personnel in jobs that are turning America’s elite fighters into millionaires. Although, you’ll need to double-check the fine print on such offers before making a commitment.

Turn Your Military Career Into 7 Figures

In most cases, the mandatory retirement age for military personnel is 64 years old. But no matter when you retire, your life after the military can take an interesting path. American consultants are in demand, and the salaries are eye-popping, to say the least. Since 2015, over 500 retired military personnel have taken jobs in foreign governments. Many of the positions offer great benefits and seven figures in compensation. They're also sometimes located in countries with sketchy human rights records. But while most of the jobs are located in the Middle East and North Africa, such offers can be found in other locations, such as Australia or Indonesia. Former senior officials of the U.S. Navy have seen offers totaling as high as eight figures; former Navy SEALs are enjoying salaries over a quarter of a million dollars. Other generous offers continue to complete the allure of such job opportunities. Questions of morality can be brought into this space, but so far, firms have remained dedicated to lending their consulting services to other government agencies. In addition, the Emoluments Clause Restrictions states that retired military personnel who have served a minimum of 20 years and can receive a pension aren’t allowed to receive jobs, fees, gifts, titles, etc. from foreign governments unless Congress approves (which they have a good track record of doing).

Are Retired Military Personnel Subject to the UCMJ?

Yes, the prosecution of military retirees under the Uniform Code of Military Justice can still occur. How this concerns taking a position in foreign governments is up to far more qualified legal experts than I to decide, but it’s an important point worth noting for anyone taking such endeavors. The consequences of being involved have had high-profile, real repercussions. For example, former national security advisor Michael Flynn has to deal with penalties for accepting money from Russia and Turkey. Retired military personnel or those on active duty have plenty of options to pursue a career after serving, but it’s important to go after these avenues the right way. Take advantage of the many resources available, and before you sign, conduct due diligence to make sure everything is on the up and up.
