When considering award recipients, especially in the context of the military, the men and women on the front lines often come to mind initially. Rightfully so, given the tremendous sacrifices they make daily in and out of service situations. Despite these thoughts and facts, there are times when unsung heroes accompany the men and women we praise who may not get the credit they deserve. Animals have made great partners, and in some cases, they act as saviors to humans in diverse settings. Whether related to simply acting as a companion to humans or saving lives in military action and humanitarian efforts, animals have shown the ability to contribute to society in a major way. The Animals in War and Peace Medal of Bravery highlights animals who have made a significant positive impact in a challenging experience. The History of the Animals in War and Peace Medal of Bravery

When thinking of the ultimate honors or achievements for animals, the Animals in War and Peace Medal of Bravery is top of the list. Animals are awarded this medal based on an undeniable display of bravery and service in scenarios relevant to war or peace. This medal of bravery was initiated on November 14, 2019, in Washington, D.C., at the Animals in War and Peace Ceremony. Since its inauguration, there have been sixteen award winners, including twelve dogs, three birds, and a horse.Some notable actions that would call for an animal to be nominated or receive the award include: a dog detective, explosives detection, a pigeon transmitting important messages across enemy lines, or a horse serving on the front lines of war. Regardless of the situation, these animals usually put their lives at risk to save human lives, which is extremely honorable.

Notable Recipients of the Animals in War and Peace Medal of Bravery

As mentioned above, sixteen animals have been awarded the Animals in War and Peace Medal of Bravery. Let’s take a closer look at three animals who earned a place in history because of their bravery.

1. Cher Ami

Cher Ami was a highly trained pigeon that was a part of the U.S. 77th Infantry Division. She also had tremendous experience flying missions. In her most notable mission, two other pigeons died from gunshot wounds, leaving only Cher Ami, who would eventually get hit as well. Though true, she still managed to push through the pain and fly to her destination to deliver a valuable message that saved the lives of around 200 Soldiers. It was a no-brainer to award Cher Ami this medal after displaying determination and courage.

2. Reckless

Reckless was a decorated war hero horse recognized for her work with various military awards. Most notably for her outstanding display of willpower and teamwork during the Korean War. She traveled in rugged terrain to provide essential supplies, even after being shot. She also saved many Soldiers while on the front lines. Due to her impact, the Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps promoted her to Staff Sergeant. Reckless has five national monuments dedicated to her and was awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal, reflecting animal bravery in the military.

3. Chips

Chips, a collie-shepherd-husky mix, is one of the most decorated dogs in military history. He was recognized for his work saving Soldiers. For example, he destroyed a sentry gun and took down the gunner behind it to save his fellow Soldier. He also detected ten enemies attempting to infiltrate the camp they were at, leading to their successful capture. Actions like this show why Chips was more than deserving of this medal.

Other Recognitions for Animals: The PDSA Dickin Medal

The PDSA Dickin Medal is another great award for animals who courageously act to save the lives of humans in military settings. It is the highest decoration an animal can receive while actively serving in the military. It was initiated in 1943 by founder Maria Dickin in an attempt to highlight bravery amongst animals in the military.
