WHO CAN GO TO A VFW BAR?
The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) are known for being a pillar in communities across the world for United States Veterans. These VFW posts offer a fraternal place to connect, unwind, and of course, have a d*mn good time. And if you’re going to have a good time, you’re likely going to need a good bar.
What Is a VFW Bar?
VFW bars are private clubs that allow their members to enjoy a beer, some wine, or maybe even a military-themed cocktail while enjoying the company of fellow Veterans. They can be found in thousands of VFW posts in both urban and rural communities. Simply Google “VFW bar near me” to find your local post.
VFW Membership Requirements and How To Join the VFW
Determining your VFW eligibility is simple. The VFW membership eligibility requirements according to the organization itself are as follows:
- You must be a U.S. citizen or a U.S. national.
- You must have performed an honorable service in the Armed Forces of the United States.
- Your service must have entitled you to an award of a recognized campaign medal or as outlined in the Congressional Charter and By-Laws and Manual of Procedure and Ritual.
Veterans who fulfill these requirements may apply, and if found to be in good standing, they are elected through a vote and then notified by their local VFW post. If you fit the bill and haven’t already, you can apply for membership today as a new member. Submit your VFW membership application today!
Understanding the VFW Auxiliary
If you are looking to get involved/join the VFW but don’t qualify, certain civilians may still do so thanks to the VFW Auxiliary. The VFW Auxiliary is comprised of spouses, parents, grandparents, siblings, children, and grandchildren of Veterans eligible to join the VFW. The VFW Auxiliary’s mission since 1914 has been to help support Veterans and their families by spreading patriotism, donating money, and volunteering. Members of the VFW Auxiliary are also able to enjoy many of the features of VFW bars, despite not meeting VFW requirements. If you are eligible for the VFW Auxiliary, this includes grabbing a drink! Can Anyone Go to a VFW Bar?
peak of more than 2 million members in 1992. Right before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, things seemed to be swinging back on track as the VFW snapped a 27-year membership decline. Still, as many older members continue to pass away and younger potential members are reluctant to join, some VFW bars are adapting to survive. According to the VFW By-Laws, civilians cannot join the VFW; however, depending on the post, there are different events and situations in which civilians may visit a VFW bar. This could be you renting out a venue space for your private event, attending as a guest, or simply grabbing a pint.
Bar Rescue Helps Highlight VFW Bars
Bar Rescue has helped two posts navigate through these challenges. In season 7, episode 5, nightlife industry expert Jon Taffer and his crew head over to VFW Post 6216, transforming the post’s kitchen, bar program, and venue space. Taffer and the gang would head back for a second VFW Bar Rescue in season 8, episode 8. Here, we find VFW Post 10054 in Pahrump, Nevada, struggling due to a decline in membership amplified by pandemic problems. In both episodes, we find the same hardworking Veterans you would expect to find at a Veteran bar combating a changing landscape for the non-profit. Thanks to industry expertise and the kindness of Paramount Network and its crew, both posts are left set up for future successes to help bolster growth and hopefully survive their struggles for years to come. We won’t ruin everything for you; however, and you can find these episodes replaying on both Hulu and Paramount+. Veterans have given us all more than we can ever repay. The ability to enjoy a pint and a bite with a good friend or a stranger safely is largely due to their service. Contact your local VFW bar to determine who can go to a VFW bar, and learn about the many opportunities available to help save these communities.
