INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL TIPS - VETERAN TRAVEL PERKS YOU NEED TO KNOW
Traveling abroad is a rewarding experience, allowing you the chance to immerse yourself in a culture that is completely different than your own. The food, people, architecture, customs, etc. all have something to teach travelers as they enjoy the world around them. However, getting from the United States to another country can be a bit more expensive than stateside travel and comes with its own considerations. Fortunately, Veteran travel benefits, discounts, and lodging are available. If you’re ready to see the world around you, here’s how to maximize your trip and save money as a Veteran.
Veteran Travel Resources
At a minimum, Vets are going to need to figure out how to get from the U.S. to another country and once they’re there, figure out where to stay. Veteran travel experiences may vary but there are several resources available.Several organizations are providing affordable services and discounted rates for Veterans who need to get from the United States and a room to stay in.Here are some important resources Veterans can use to find free or inexpensive travel and lodging abroad:
American Forces Travel (AFT)
Acting as a Veteran travel agency of sorts, the American Forces Travel program is available to Vets with an honorable discharge or retired service members, among others in the military community. It’s easy to use, simply:
- Go online to determine whether or not you’re eligible.
- Shop through various packages offered by a partnership through Priceline.
There are flights available for Vets that don’t have booking fees and if you need to change your reservation, the fee for doing so is reduced.Furthermore, with over 1.2 million properties around the world, you’ll find plenty of discounted rates, up to 50% off, available for your stay through the Veteran travel club. There are also formal vacation packages available for Veterans, cruises up to 80% off, deals on rental vehicles, and even exclusive deals on events like concerts.
WeSalute+ Travel
Finding Veteran travel deals is made easier through WeSalute+ Travel, which allows you to find savings on trips from around the world.Veterans can utilize the website to find 40% off of already discounted prices for flights, hotels, and vehicle rentals.Becoming a WeSalute+ Member provides you with a variety of perks and peace of mind knowing you’re saving more on your next adventure. There’s even Veteran travel insurance available through WeSalute+ Travel Protection to help you in case of an emergency while abroad.
Veteran Space-A Travel
Veterans have another unique perk of getting around, known as Space-A, which provides free flights courtesy of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).Using the Space-A program for international travel is a bit more popular in Hawaii than other places but the opportunity is still available elsewhere. However, while this DoD perk is available, Vets will need to understand how it all works:
- DoD aircraft that are approved for Space-A travel may have room and fly from one military base to another. This includes international flights.
- It’s free, except for AMC's Patriot Express flights, which typically have a fee.
- Vets, including disabled Veterans, may ride only when there is space and accommodations can be made. The needs of the military come first.
- Your rank, service branch, and length of service may be considered when determining who can fly; however, Space-A strives for an equal playing field for all.
Therefore, keep in mind that you’ll need to find flights that match your trip both there and coming back, meet eligibility requirements, and have a way to access the appropriate military bases when flying on Space-A.
Armed Forces Recreation Centers (AFRCs)
Armed Forces Recreation Centers are a part of the DoD and there are two overseas available for Veterans to enjoy; however, to be eligible without being the guest of a sponsor, here’s how you qualify:
- You have a 100% VA disability rating and an honorable discharge.
- You have a Medal of Honor.
- You’re a Retired Veteran.
The Veteran travel packages available overseas involve the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in the Bavarian Alps in Germany, as well as the Dragon Hill Lodge in downtown Seoul, South Korea. Each Veteran travel program provides unique features with the Edelweiss Lodge a better getaway for those looking to be one with nature and Dragon Hill Lodge providing a more urban, cultural experience.
3 Veteran Travel Tips for Your Adventure Abroad
Now that you know how to find the best travel deals, it’s important to plan your trip accordingly.Going overseas is always going to take a few unique steps of preparation but for Veterans, there are some keys to a successful travel experience unique to the community.Whether it’s your first time or your thousandth heading out of the U.S., here are three things to consider:
1. Have Your Healthcare in Order
Veterans traveling overseas should let their healthcare team know. This includes personnel both within the VA and outside providers. You’ll want to let your healthcare team know at least four to six weeks ahead of time to make sure your appointments are met and your medication is refilled.Utilizing My HealtheVet will go a long way here as it’s an easy-to-use, secure method of communicating with your provider.Furthermore, you’ll need to have up-to-date copies of any important healthcare-related documentation, such as your insurance card.Veterans will also need to stay up to date on their vaccines and pack their necessary meds, plus a few extra just in case, for the trip. Finally, it’s important to prepare for whatever may come your way. Be sure to understand how to access telehealth options from the VA if medical attention is needed.
2. Shop Airline Discounts
Yes, we’ve mentioned plenty of Veteran travel resources that provide you with discounted airfare; however, shopping among airlines is a great way to double-check deals—even at the last minute. There are so many tools available and plenty of individual airlines offer discounts for the Veteran community. You can even use programs, such as VetRewards from Veterans Advantage, though there is a cost for doing so.Overall, it pays to shop and compare, or rather, you pay less as a result.
3. Purchase Travel Insurance
It’s no secret that the cost of traveling abroad isn’t getting any cheaper and there are a host of things that can go wrong.Instead of worrying about what might happen, protect yourself with travel insurance that is affordable and provides you with peace of mind.USAA offers this protection as well as many other carriers and entities that specialize in protecting you from large financial losses while traveling internationally.Veteran travel benefits, tips, and resources come in many different forms but ultimately, safeguarding your health and your wealth should be at the top of your list.Sources:Know before you go: Manage your VA care while traveling, VA.
