An Epic World War II Trilogy Is Coming to an End
Between the years of 1942 and 1945, bomb after bomb fell. The United States was sending its Eighth Air Force’s 100th Bomb Group in frigid temps during the middle of the day to destroy key Nazi cities. Hitler could hide no more. Refueling missions were necessary, yet vulnerable even by their standards. Cities like Hanover and Berlin were feeling destruction below, but so too were the men responsible for the attacks above. Someone on the crew of a B-17 could complete their tour of duty after 25 missions, but the odds of surviving this were only 25%. The Luftwaffe were experienced. Additionally, B-17 bombers could fly great distances making it unlikely for fighter pilots to go with them. This meant fighting off Nazi Germany while trying to bomb it all at once. The Masters of the Air episodes are going to be portraying these struggles. A decade ago in January 2013, Masters of the Air was set to begin development; however, there were several problems, delays, and financial issues that killed the project. Fast forward and it faced even more issues when COVID-19 stopped filming in 2020. But after all of that, it is debuting on Apple TV+. The writer from The Pacific, John Orloff, and director Cary Joji Fukunaga, who has been involved in a number of notable projects, are delivering a story unlike any other.
