Was Jeffrey Dahmer in the Military? What Is Jeffrey Dahmer’s Army Record?

Before attending his first semester at Ohio State University, and several years before he joined the military, Dahmer killed his first victim, 18-year-old Steven Hicks, a hitchhiker, after luring him home with the promise of a few beers. Following his fall semester at Ohio State University, Jeffrey Dahmer’s military career officially started when he left school and told his father that he would be enlisting in the military. Jeffrey Dahmer’s military journey began in January 1979 when he enlisted in the Army – just one year after his first killing. Upon learning this, many people question why he was allowed in the Army in the first place. As someone who had murdered someone, were there no red flags? No indication that this man might not have been all he claimed to be when applying to join the military? And the answer is no, there wasn’t. Any Jeffrey Dahmer military photos from his time in service show what an uninformed onlooker might see as just another normal Soldier. Unfortunately, people like Dahmer are inherently good at hiding their true nature, so no one in the Army had any reason to suspect him of any of the purely evil acts he had committed. At the beginning of Jeffrey Dahmer’s military service, he started as a medical specialist and trained at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, before he was stationed in Baumholder, West Germany, where he served as a combat medic. During his first year in service, Jeffrey Dahmer’s Army record was rated at an “average or slightly above average” level, meaning his superior officers were at least somewhat impressed with his service. During this time, over a 17-month period, one of Dahmer’s roommates, Billy Capshaw, claimed that Dahmer sexually assaulted him repeatedly and borderline tortured him. Not too long after this, Jeffrey Dahmer’s military status started to slip. His performance wasn’t as satisfactory as it had been, and his quality of work gradually deteriorated due to excessive drinking. You might think the abuse, assault, and murder were getting to him, but the mind of a psychopath doesn’t operate in areas of remorse. You can watch statements from Capshaw about his time in service with Dahmer and his opinion on the new Netflix series in the Dr. Phil interview below. Warning: This interview contains sensitive language surrounding sexual assault and violence.

Why Did Jeffrey Dahmer Get Discharged From the Military?

After his performance in training hit rock bottom, Dahmer’s senior officers decided that his drinking “impaired his ability to become a Soldier.” However, at the time, no one thought that his drinking and performance problems would be disruptive to others in civilian life or impede upon his ability to live a normal life. Therefore, in March 1981, he was honorably discharged from the military. In a shocking turn of events for many, Jeffrey Dahmer’s military discharge was due to his excessive drinking and his poor performance in military training, not the gruesome murder he committed, which wasn’t exposed until long after. So how long did Jeffrey Dahmer serve in the military? His drinking became a problem pretty quickly, so he only served for a little over two years from January 1979 to March 1981. His discharge served as a catalyst for his rampant violent behavior. His other actions in the Army, for which there were no repercussions, made for an even worse future for Dahmer’s victims. Back at the time, Army culture made male Soldiers feel that they were unable to report things like sexual assault by another man. The culture, frankly, hasn’t improved as much as it should have since then. If Dahmer had been convicted for his actions then, if the Soldier felt safe enough to report what happened, then the lives of sixteen other men may have been different. But, of course, this is all speculation, and the deaths of his victims are 100% on his hands.

Where Is Jeffrey Dahmer Now?

On July 22, 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer was finally caught, arrested, convicted, and sent straight to prison, where he was beaten to death by his roommate, Christopher Sarver, on November 28, 1994. This would make Dahmer’s prison time a total of about two and a half years. Dahmer was cremated and did not have a memorial service. If he were alive today, he would still be serving time in prison for his convictions. How many years did Dahmer get? He was given 15 consecutive life sentences for the murders he was convicted of.

The End of Jeffrey Dahmer

Jeffrey Dahmer’s Army record is shocking to many. Let’s get some things straight, though; no matter his service, he was not a hero, he was not deserving of any praise, and he was not a good man. He will go down in history as one of the most notorious and coldhearted killers to ever exist. He will definitely be remembered but for all the wrong reasons.
