CHINA’S ARMED ROBOT DOG WAS RIPPED STRAIGHT FROM STAR WARS
Robot dogs are not a new thing to the media or to the military. With a plethora of movies and shows featuring robot dogs, it’s not hard to imagine what one might look like. You can even purchase your own robot dog! But what about an armed robot dog? What do they look like? Here’s a hint: it doesn’t look like the cute, silly things you see in the movies (unless you’re thinking of a Star Wars AT-AT Walker). Testing China’s New Armed Robot Dog
This China robot dog is Kestrel Defense’s latest new “toy.” In a video featured on a popular Chinese social media site, the armed robot dog was carried by a drone to a building before being dropped onto the rooftop. The dog then began patrolling the rooftop armed with a Chinese machine gun. Details about the inner workings of the mechanical beast are currently slim to none, but its mounted 5.8x42mm QBB-97 light machine gun tells us everything we need to know about its capabilities. This fancy (and terrifying) new robot dog conveys a new future for military forces everywhere. Robot dogs already exist in many militaries around the world, but this new armed robot dog is making waves.
Robot Dogs in the U.S. Military
The U.S. has been using robot dogs for a few years. There are some designed for protection and surveillance and even some with snipers attached to them. Thankfully, these dogs are usually controlled remotely, meaning that a robot dog isn’t going to gain sentience and show up at your house to murder you. (At least, hopefully not.) But this new China robot dog is causing a bit of a stir. What do these machine-gun-armed robot dogs in China mean for them and the rest of the world?
The Future for Robot Dogs in the Military
Since this video from China has become viral, a lot of discourse has started about this new tech. Thankfully, they’ve not quite reached maturity yet. A lot of growth is still happening with these armed robot dogs; many are still in the experimental stages and are too fragile for combat. A lot of robot-developing companies have even pledged not to weaponize their robot dogs and are asking others to do the same. However, not all companies have made the pledge. Armed robot dogs may be the next big thing for the defense industry. Though most available for purchase right now are fluffy and made for children, military-grade robot dogs are pretty sweet in a different way. While an armed robot dog can sound exciting for many, it can also sound terrifying for those scared of a future where sentient robots rule. For all of our robot-fearing people out there, you (probably) won’t need to worry. These dogs are still in the prototype phase; they’re not ready for battle – yet.
