ISRAEL’S GROUND WAR IN GAZA IN 2023 HAS BEGUN
Israel's ground war in Gaza has officially begun. The move comes even after the United States was looking to get more time for American defenses to be in place. Since the horrific terrorist attacks from Hamas earlier in October 2023, the month is ending as Israeli forces move from its bombardment-exclusive tactics and begin sending troops on the ground to take over the region. All of this comes as pressure is mounting on the U.S. Additionally, Israel continues due to the dangerous situation Palestinians find themselves in. Israel Gaza Ground Invasion Marks a New Phase of War With Hamas
The 2023 Israeli ground operations in the Gaza Strip began on October 28. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the escalation, describing it as a war for Israel's existence. He noted that this phase would be a long and difficult one. While the new phase of the conflict includes bombardment and artillery fire, it also involves boots on the ground. The goal of destroying and dismantling Hamas continues as airstrikes target key figures, including leaders of various Hamas operations. Communications are suffering as Israeli airstrikes are causing an Internet blackout in the Gaza Strip. This is disrupting communications and control for ambulances and aid groups. Elon Musk is looking into possibly providing Starlink Internet for aid organizations; however, Israel is threatening retaliation over such actions. They fear that Hamas will use it for terrorism. Israel's ground war in Gaza has noted objectives aiming to destroy those in charge of naval and air force operations for Hamas. In the weeks leading up to the invasion but following the terrorist attacks, intense rocketry is being reportedly aimed at Israel, though many forces outside of Gaza are involved. Having the involvement of multiple forces complicates things. This is because Iranian-backed forces have attacked American and Israeli targets in the region. The U.S. remains determined to avoid having boots on the ground but still supports Israel in other capacities. But doing so has the threat to still inspire other countries in the region to become involved. This risk is not lost on President Biden. He is urging other nations to stay out of it. Furthermore, the idea of two distinct states is facing criticism but it could possibly be a long-term solution.
The Two State Solution Is Once Again Being Revisited
The two-state solution, where Israel coexists with an independent Palestinian state, has faced difficulties. It has been put aside since the collapse of peace talks in 2014, and frankly, well before. President Biden initially focused on normalizing Israel's relations with Arab neighbors but is now emphasizing the need to pursue a Palestinian state after the Israel-Hamas war. However, there are significant obstacles, (including Israel's opposition to an independent Palestinian state) faced by those in power over Palestine. How to divide them, and whether or not the two would actually coexist, has had critics on both sides. While some are looking for a tangible solution, many do not wish to concede as animosity festers. Despite the challenges, Biden aims to convey hope and support for a Palestinian state. However, its feasibility remains a subject of debate. Israel's ground war in Gaza is now causing Palestinian-American groups and Muslim advocacy organizations to voice frustration with President Biden's strong support for Israel. This stems from rising Palestinian casualties and the worsening humanitarian situation for those in Gaza. While Biden has expressed concern for innocent civilians in Gaza, the United States remains a committed Israeli supporter. Now, American Muslim leaders want to have the POTUS call for a cease-fire and address the mounting humanitarian crisis. Related read: Save Our Allies Is Continuing Its Mission in Israel and Gaza
Israel’s Ground War in Gaza Contrasts With Worsening Humanitarian Issues
Thousands of people have broken into aid warehouses to obtain essential supplies aimed at helping those in Israel and the Gaza Strip. Signaling growing desperation and a breakdown of public order, the ongoing Israeli-Hamas conflict is facing its third week with no end in sight. The criticism on the humanitarian side of things is getting louder as casualties mount, particularly among women and minors. Reports are saying that deaths top 8,000 in Gaza. Now, refugees are finding accessing aid even more difficult. Deteriorating civil order in the region is causing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to speak up. This is happening as refugees face the threat of harm from airstrikes. The Israeli government has ordered the evacuation of some hospitals, but they have refused, fearing it would harm patients on ventilators. Now, increasing pressure is growing to secure hostages. This remains a tricky proposition. Israel's ground war in Gaza will likely increase the need for aid in the region as casualties on both sides rise. Regardless of American interest, or any number of complex factors drawing support for either group, the harsh reality is that until the war is over, many are caught up in a dangerous situation. There are no easy solutions for improvement. Read next: Israel Gaza Conflict Is Already Gaining American Involvement
