Veteran representation in Congress hits historic low of 15%

The incoming Congress will include just 15% veterans, a sharp decline from the 1970s when nearly three-quarters of lawmakers had served in uniform. This shift means fewer members with direct military experience will influence decisions on defense policy, benefit programs, and military compensation that touch active duty personnel, Guard and Reserve members, and their families.
With fewer veteran voices in the legislative branch, advocacy for expanded benefits, healthcare funding, and pay increases may slow considerably. Historically, initiatives involving TRICARE, the GI Bill, VA healthcare, and housing allowances have progressed faster when veterans held larger numbers of congressional seats.
