THE USS JOHN BASILONE: A CLOSER LOOK AT THE NEW US DESTROYER
The Navy still needs new ships, and the arrival of the USS John Basilone (DDG 122) is a welcomed one for its fleet. Named after a decorated war hero, who fought in some of the toughest battles in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, the new US destroyer ship will help our nation bolster its naval defenses as tensions rise across the globe. Interestingly enough, it’s also been spotted with a brand new battle flag ahead of its official commissioning.
What Is the USS John Basilone?
Named after Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. John Basilone, the USS John Basilone is the second ship to bear the legendary Marine’s namesake.
The plan is to have the new US destroyer commission in New York City on November 9, 2024, where it will head to its homeport, Naval Station Mayport, Florida.
This is the 72nd ship in its class, as it is a Flight IIA Arleigh Burke–class guided missile destroyer
Basilone Dies a Hero
When the Buffalo native set out to become a Soldier in the Army, little did he know just how much he would accomplish.
Basilone served in the Army in the Philippines from 1936 to 1939 and then transitioned over to the Marines a year later, where he would earn the nickname “Manila John” and high praise for his combat skills.
During the Battle for Henderson Field, Basilone served with the 1st Marine Division through a brutal assault with limited supplies and an exhausted crew.
Despite these hellish conditions, Basilone successfully delivered crucial ammunition to his gunners under fire, repeatedly putting his life at risk, and helping to drive back the enemy.
His actions and leadership received high praise and ultimately, the Medal of Honor.
A prime example of his leadership was on full display when receiving the award, as he preferred to honor his fellow Marines, holding a small ceremony with his unit rather than at the White House with President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Later, he declined a commission and a desk job. After touring the U.S. promoting war bonds, Basilone returned to combat.
Sadly, he would die during the Battle of Iwo Jima. For his efforts, he was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.
Today, Basilone is remembered as a symbol of courage and dedication. His legacy of selfless heroism continues to inspire Marines and servicemembers, embodying the spirit of commitment to one’s comrades and country.
USS John Basilone: New US Destroyer, New Battle Flag
Even though the USS John Basilone is just getting ready to join the Navy’s fleet, the warship is already making waves.
As seen on X.com, previously known as Twitter, the ship is flying a brand-new battle flag that is a tribute to the man it's named after.
This tribute was seen while the new US destroyer was moving down the Kennebec River. While it’s hard to say exactly what the battle flag looks like, here’s what we know:
- The new warship’s crest is present—crossed Browning M1917 machine guns set on a blue diamond background that has stars shaped like a Southern Cross surrounding it.
- There is a crimson background that the blue diamond lays on. It features two gold palm branches, similar to what you’d find in Guadalcanal.
- The words “Take a Stand” and “Move Forward” are also found, to further honor the service Basilone provided our nation.
The USS Basilone and its new battle flag honor the extraordinary leadership, courage, and service provided by the man who gave it its namesake. A fitting tribute to a true American hero.
