Located 30 minutes northeast of Dayton, Ohio, Wright-Patt spans over 8,000 acres with two runways. It supports more than 30,000 military and civilian personnel, making it one of the Air Force's largest installations. Named after aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright and Lt. Frank Stewart Patterson, the base is home to major units like the Air Force Material Command, the Air Force Research Lab, and the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. The base is divided into two main areas, each with multiple gates. As always, a valid military ID is required for entry. Most gates operate weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., but gates 12a and 22b are open 24-7. For visitors, temporary passes are available at the Pass and Registration Office on Area A, Monday through Friday. Enlisted members may live in dorms, and limited on-base quarters are available for officers. Most families opt for the properties at Wright Field, privatized housing just 15 minutes from base. Nearby cities like Fairbourn, Beaver Creek, and Dayton offer additional military-friendly communities.
