US TROOPS DEPLOYED? THOUSANDS AWAIT THE MIDDLE EAST
Although the times and players may have changed, the United States having an involvement in the Middle East is far from a new reality. Even though U.S. troops deployed and were withdrawn from places such as Afghanistan and Iraq in 2021, America has always maintained a presence. As a global force, troops are stationed all over the globe. Now, as the war between Israel and Hamas is ongoing, U.S. troop deployment in the Middle East is a more active role once again. Where Are U.S. Troops Deployed?
In give or take 150 countries, you’ll find U.S. troops deployed. The United States of America has military personnel on literally every continent, depending on how you view the scientists in Antarctica. With 750 bases in 80 countries, it’s hard to go anywhere and not find American GIs. This strategy of being virtually everywhere at once is how the U.S. maintains its position as the world’s leading superpower. Deploying troops allows for a faster response time and more capabilities than having them located only stateside. The highest concentration of U.S. troops deployed can be found in friendly ally nations. Japan, Germany, and South Korea are all the nations with the highest concentration of troops outside of America. These bases exist in the event the U.S. needs to deploy troops in response to various hostile regions. Such conditions are unfolding in 2023, as the U.S. deploying troops near or to Israel is becoming a reality. However, both allies continue to take the stance that U.S. troop deployment will be in a supportive role, not a direct role. Interestingly enough, America already has a facility within Israel.
A Permanent Shared Facility Within Israel
Since 2017, the Negev Desert has had ties to the American Armed Forces in a collaborative effort with Israeli forces. Inside the Mashabim Air Base, the U.S. opened its first permanent military base in Israel with dozens of personnel inside. To be clear, the deployment of troops here is exclusive from a foreign standpoint, as America is the only foreign force in Israel. However, the facilities are still primarily for Israeli military forces. Yet, deployed military here still have an active role in maintaining both nations' security and interests. A symbol of the commitment between the allies, the “base within the base” has a bit of mystery surrounding it as its precise function remains unspecified. However, the move was a signal toward Iran to showcase unified strength as Iran continues to influence the region. Suggested read:Israel Gaza Conflict Is Already Gaining American Involvement
Any U.S. Troops Deployed Would Be to Offer Support for Israeli Forces
As of now, the United States deployed troops number is set to rise by 2,000. This is because of the attacks from Hamas on Israel. Additionally, the regional tension with Iran points to the need for support. Now, the U.S. is ready to respond. The message has been clear. American troops aren’t going to go to Israel or Gaza directly; however, they will be entering nearby countries to support Israeli forces in a variety of functions. These include assisting with medical, intel, and explosive functions. The U.S.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower CSG is also going to meet up with the U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford to support Israel indirectly. As of this writing, both sides continue to prepare for an imminent land invasion by Israel into Gaza in response to a terrorist attack by Hamas. Thousands have died because of the worst attack on Israel in decades and the fallout that stemmed from it. Despite President Joe Biden visiting the region, things have continued to become more and more complicated with every passing minute. Israel isn't the only visit on President Biden’s itinerary. He is also set to visit other nations. Now, it looks like additional countries may have to wait for a visit after a deadly attack on a hospital in Gaza has both Hamas and Israel blaming each other for the casualties. Diplomacy is important during such volatile times. Still, regardless of the feelings of other nations, deploying U.S. troops to support one of our strongest allies in the region is becoming a reality before our very eyes.
