BAS Military Pay Gets Updated for 2026 — Here's What You'll Receive

With another annual increase to the BAS, military members are seeing a modest but steady rise in their monthly food allowance. The 2026 BAS rates took effect January 1, 2026, following a 2.4% increase based on USDA food cost data.

What Is BAS?

Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS) is a monthly, non-taxable payment intended to help offset a service member's personal food costs. It traces its origins to the historical military practice of providing rations (food and supplies) as part of a soldier's compensation. Today, BAS is paid in cash rather than as physical rations.

Unlike Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), BAS is not tied to pay grade or dependent status and will not change as a result of events like getting promoted or gaining dependents. BAS is a monthly pay allowance for food expenses, but it may be spent at the discretion of the service member. It is not intended to fund the cost of food for family members.

BAS is linked to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) food cost index. Each year, the BAS rate is adjusted for any increase in the price of food. An increase in BAS is not connected to the annual pay raise, which is determined by an increase in private sector wages.

The USDA evaluates current food costs in the continental United States to help determine BAS rates. These rates correlate with the overall cost of food, but unlike BAH, BAS rates are averaged across all zip codes and applied universally. So, a service member in rural Kansas and one in San Diego get the exact same amount, even though the cost of living (and food costs) likely vary considerably.

“BAS is best understood as part of a service member’s food plan, not extra spending money,” said Forrest Baumhover, Certified Financial Planner at The Military Wallet.

“For junior enlisted members especially, the smartest move is to treat that $476.95 as a monthly grocery budget, plan meals around it before payday, and avoid letting convenience spending quietly turn a tax-free allowance into another source of financial pressure.”

2026 BAS Rates

The 2026 Basic Allowance for Subsistence is $476.95 per month for enlisted members and $328.48 for officers, a 2.4% increase from 2025.

For enlisted members, that's an $11.18 monthly increase from the 2025 rate. For officers, the monthly increase is $7.70. Enlisted service members saw roughly an additional $132 annually.

BAS II is a special variant of the allowance available only to enlisted members; officers are not eligible, regardless of their housing situation. The 2026 BAS II rate is $953.90/month, exactly double the standard enlisted rate.

BAS II applies when the service member is assigned to a permanent duty station, living in single unaccompanied government quarters without adequate food storage or meal preparation facilities, and with no government dining facility available on the installation.

How Does the 2026 Increase Compare?

BAS increased 2.4% in 2026. In 2025, the increase was a bit lower at 1.2%, but the 2023 increase of 11% was the most substantial in recent years. The average cost of food, as tracked by the USDA, determines these increases.

The 2026 BAS increase accompanied a nationwide average BAH increase of 4.2% and a 3.8% boost in military pay this year.

Eligibility for BAS

Those eligible for BAS include enlisted and officer personnel serving in the Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Marine Corps, and Army. A few important points about how BAS actually works in practice: the allowance is not intended to cover food costs for a spouse, children, or other dependents. The BAS rate does not increase if you have dependents.

Members are not eligible for BAS if they are:

• Attending basic training or officer training
• On excess leave status
• On educational leave that has been approved
• AWOL
• Members at the Reserve/Officer Candidate School without continuous prior service

BAS is also not provided to any service member who is deployed or on duty on field-training exercises, as units provide food directly during those periods.

Economic Context

BAS is a tax-free monthly allowance that helps offset a portion of the cost of meals and food. Rates increase each year to match the changing food-cost index, set by the USDA.

Because the adjustment is tied to food prices rather than wages, the percentage can vary significantly year to year, which is why 2023 saw a huge 11.2% jump during peak grocery inflation, while 2026's 2.4% reflects a more stabilized food market.
