What Is the Veterans Legacy Memorial Project?

The Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM) is a memorial featuring over 4.4 million Veterans available online. Here, you can find American Heroes who have been interred throughout VA National Cemeteries, VA grant-funded tribal, state, and territory Veteran cemeteries, and two of the 14 National Park Service National Cemeteries. For now, there are additional cemeteries at large, including the U.S. Army’s Arlington National Cemetery. However, they may be added as updates occur to the VLM database. In collaboration with the National Cemetery Administration (NCA), the National Park Service is the first federal agency to assist in expanding the Veterans Legacy Memorial. Together, these agencies were able to add 20,574 Veteran and service member profiles interred at two National Park Service cemeteries onto the portal. The VA’s NCA moderators review all submitted content before it’s added to the pages belonging to Veterans. This is to ensure it meets their guidelines and is content that properly honors Veterans. Over 45,000 submissions have been made since 2019 when the website was launched for existing profiles. Specifically, you can find 18,752 new profile pages for honoring Veterans and service members interred at Andersonville National Cemetery in Andersonville, Georgia, and 1,822 interred at Andrew Johnson National Cemetery in Greeneville, Tennessee.

A Digital Tool for Families

There are many interactive features for users that allow them to honor fallen Veterans. You can post comments, upload images, share the military service timeline of a Veteran, post tributes, and much more. You’ll find a wealth of information also attached. This includes the Veteran’s achievements, biographical information, historical documents, and other important points of information for their military service. The Veterans Legacy Memorial is a great tool not only as a new way to honor fallen Veterans but also as a useful resource for those who may not be able to visit an in-person memorial for a loved one. Life has many ups and downs, twists and turns, and everyone walks a different path. Users may have physical disabilities or could have moved far away from a cemetery or are unable to visit a Veterans memorial and are still looking for a way to honor their loved ones. Now, this ability has been put at their fingertips.

VLM Is a Great Way To Honor National Veteran and Military Families Month

The Veterans Legacy Memorial provides an easily-accessible way to further immortalize your loved ones and America’s heroes. In addition to the portal, the NCA also has the Find a Cemetery page. Here, you can pinpoint where Veterans are buried and navigate for the features found on VLM. National Veteran and Military Families Month is a great time to remember and honor the military community, specifically those who've served. Take advantage of the Veterans Legacy Memorial as a fitting tribute to heroes who sacrificed to provide us with the freedoms we enjoy today.
