In Honor of Our Troops (IHOOT) Foundation

At the heart of IHOOT’s mission is to provide free vacations for disabled Veterans at world-class resorts anywhere on the planet. The organization began at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center after members of the American Armed Forces began receiving treatment for their wounds due to service in the Global War on Terrorism.IHOOT is a non-profit that continues to help bring awareness to the Veteran community and helps families recover from the aftermath of war. Here’s how it works:

  • IHOOT’s Vacation for Vets Program acts as a portal where Veterans can request lodging at 4 and 5-star resorts worldwide for up to 8 days and 7 nights.
  • Submit your application and then the IHOOT team verifies it before sending it off to appropriate resorts for acceptance.
  • Historically, resorts have a 91% approval rate meaning you’ll want to plan a backup just in case but overall, applications that make it this far are accepted as free vacations for Veterans.
  • Should you be rejected, for example, if the dates you wish to book are already booked, then IHOOT can rebook you for another vacation.
  • Requests are handled in the order they are received.
  • Keep in mind that the process can take weeks or longer as resorts are businesses and have their own paying customers to also contend with while trying to find free accommodations for Veterans.
  • The more popular the location, the longer your wait will likely be.

Helping Veterans recover and families reconnect is what IHOOT is all about. When planning your summer vacation be sure to check your options to enjoy a free trip of a lifetime.

How to Plan a Summer Vacation

Planning your summer vacation is essential for a successful trip. This doesn’t mean you have to have an itinerary with every minute of every day booked. In most cases, this is actually a bad idea. However, while you’re giving yourself and your family some breathing room, you’re also going to want to have a solid foundation of what to spend and expect during the trip. Here’s how you make a game plan that helps maximize your summer trip:

Set Your Vacation Budget

A lot goes into determining your summer vacation budget. However, doing so is going to help you the rest of the way.Going into massive debt for a trip can be counterproductive and can turn your opportunity for relaxation into extra stress.Be realistic and disciplined to stick to your budget whatever it might be, and of course, utilize all of the resources available above to receive discounted rates during your stay. When creating your budget, be sure to not only include the cost of getting to and from your destination but also for rentals and ridesharing once you’ve arrived at your destination if appropriate.Meals, activities, and souvenirs all cost money and you’ll want to be sure to set aside some cash for each. Finally, impulses happen. Plans change. Emergencies are unfortunately possible. Always be sure to have extra money available just in case for whatever comes your way.

Narrow Down Your Destinations

If you’re reading our list then you’re already on the right track of narrowing down your summer vacation destination. Where you go is one of the most important aspects of your trip. It will have a major impact on everything else.Just be sure to stick to your budget to maximize your time without regret later. It’s impossible to fully prepare for the future. However, take into account the cost, weather, activities, and time of travel when picking your summer trip destination.

Book Your Reservations ASAP

The sooner you have your transportation and lodging booked, the better off you’ll be. Not only for peace of mind but in many cases, you’ll end up saving money by booking early.Summer trips are a popular time for travel and that also means availability can be an issue. Especially if you’re picking a popular location. Book early to make sure you get what you want at a price you can afford. When you are booking, take into account the discounts for Veterans available and perks, such as Space-A Travel, which offers free flights for Veterans.Furthermore, while booking your flight, campsite, hotel, etc. are all important, don’t forget to book activities, dinners, and excursions.Utilizing apps, such as Resy, OpenTable, or Tock can help you not only find great local spots to dine but also book your reservations so that you’re ready to go once you arrive.

Use Social Media for Local Tips

If you want to enjoy your destination like the locals do then planning your summer vacation should include some time scrolling social media to find hidden gems from those who know your vacation spot the most.Local influencers can be paid for their hype, so take things with a grain of salt. If you look up where you’re going ahead of time, you’ll be able to likely find some of the lesser-known attractions and eateries that may just be the highlight of your trip.

Prepare Your Home and Pack

Finally, once you’ve booked your summer trip and have a game plan, it’s time to pack. While doing so, you’ll also want to make a plan for your home while you’re away. We’ll look into what to pack below; however, you’ll need to consider weight limits if you are traveling on a plane, cargo space if you’re driving, and essentials, such as a valid passport, when traveling abroad. The last thing you want to do is book a trip to Spain and not be able to go because your paperwork isn’t in order or scramble to make weight at the airport.Furthermore, while you’re away, your home still deserves care. Asking a trusted neighbor to take in the newspaper and packages can help keep potential thieves at bay. Don’t forget to also make appropriate arrangements for your pets.
