Russell Vought Doesn’t Have Military Service

Despite having many strong opinions on defense spending, policies that affect active-duty service members, and legislation tied to Veterans' benefits, Russell Vought has not served in the military. Though not a Veteran, Vought is a noted legal expert and lobbyist. He has plenty of education and experience involving both of these sectors.

Positions and Ties to Project 2025

During the Trump administration, Russell Vought was the director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). He continues to be one of the former President’s biggest supporters. There have even been controversies when Biden came into the role of POTUS, where the administration accused Vought of making the transition between the old and new staff unnecessarily difficult. Though Russell Vought doesn’t have military service himself, he does believe that the President should have the ability to use their powers more broadly. This includes deploying service members stateside to help local law enforcement. However, one of Vought’s most controversial ties is to his role as a lobbyist for the Heritage Foundation, most notably, helping create and advocate for Project 2025. There’s a lot going on in Project 2025. It touches basically every aspect of the political world from the military to…well if you can think it, it’s probably in there. The wide-reaching hyper-conservative manifesto is built to align more power under the Trump administration through policies, ideals, and actionable steps. Many criticize it as an insertion of Christian values in government. This includes the 180-Day Transition Playbook Vought has helped create. It outlines the first six months of Trump’s presidency, should he win. It’s these types of connections and roles that may be lining up one of Trump’s most loyal allies to a very powerful position in office depending on the outcome of the 2024 election.

Russell Vought’s Lack of Military Service May Not Matter

Being a Veteran continues to be a factor for some voters but as Russell Vought can be appointed, it’s more of a domino effect as a result of what happens with Trump’s presidential campaign. This is why the Project 2025 co-author has a legitimate shot at becoming one of the most influential roles our government has to offer. For example, the White House Chief of Staff, a key figure within the presidential Cabinet. Russell Vought’s lack of military service does not mean a lack of experience. He is well-versed in law as well as how the game of politics works. Most importantly, his loyalty to Trump keeps his profile high, and a figure to watch throughout the election season.
