WILL IODINE PILLS PROTECT YOU FROM A NUCLEAR BLAST?
With the recent tensions between Russia and Ukraine, many may be wondering: is nuclear war imminent? If nuclear war is on the horizon, how can we protect ourselves against it? Iodine pills have been used to combat radiation exposure in the past, so do we need to buy some now? The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently purchased a large number of pills known as Nplate. Nplate, though not an iodine pill, is meant to treat blood cell damages that occur with Acute Radiation Syndrome. So if the U.S. is buying these pills in bulk, that undoubtedly means nuclear warfare is about to start, right? With the sensationalist nature of many news outlets, it can be hard to find good information about iodine pills and the recent nuclear war threats. Keep reading to learn more about nuclear war, the purpose of iodine pills, and where to get iodine pills if you want to. See more:Think You Know How To Survive a Nuclear Bomb? Find Out Here!
What Are Iodine Pills Used For?
Iodine pills have a lot of usages, but using iodine pills for radiation is the most commonly known purpose. So what do iodine pills do? What’s their purpose? Iodine pills can be used to aid in the treatment of Acute Radiation Syndrome, or ARS for short. The most common iodine radiation pills are Potassium Iodide (KI). They’ve been shown to help combat the effects of ARS.
What Do Iodine Pills Do for Radiation?
ARS happens when an individual is exposed to extremely high amounts of radiation in a short period of time. For example, being in the vicinity of an atomic bomb detonating or a nuclear accident (think Chernobyl disaster) will likely cause you to develop ARS. High levels of radiation often include large amounts of radioactive iodine. Iodine is commonly stored in the thyroid, so radioactive iodine can be stored in the thyroid after a nuclear incident. This can commonly lead to thyroid cancer. Potassium Iodide pills (KI pills) are meant to flood the body, specifically the thyroid, with iodine so that the radioactive iodine cannot be absorbed. However, even with these iodine pills, radiation sickness is likely.
How To Take Iodine Pills for Radiation
KI pills are most effective when taken shortly before or immediately after exposure to radioactive iodine. Essentially, it must be taken within 4 hours after exposure or 24 hours before exposure for it to be at its most effective. Also, its effectiveness depends on how much radioactive iodine is already in your body. But keep in mind that KI only protects your thyroid, not the other parts of your body, and it does not protect against any other types of radiation. So if it’s been five hours since your initial exposure to a nuclear blast full of a bunch of other radioactive chemicals, you’re probably screwed.
Radioactive Iodine Pills
While there are non-radioactive iodine pills (like Potassium Iodide), there are also radioactive iodine pills that people can take. These radioactive pills are not being used by the Russians to secretly poison Americans, but they are being used by medical professionals to treat thyroid cancers. You might be asking, “But radioactive iodine can cause thyroid cancer. How does it help cure it?” The science behind it is that once the radioactive iodine is absorbed into the bloodstream and then the thyroid, the radioactivity will destroy the cancer cells. One of the side effects of radioactive iodine pills, however, is that the person who ingested it will give off radiation after taking it. Doctors and nurses have to take several precautions with administering the drug and with the patient’s aftercare.
Where To Buy Iodine Pills
Iodine pills have no real use for the average person. To justify taking iodine pills, radiation exposure is necessary, and it should be taken under the direction of a medical professional (such as a healthcare provider or an emergency response official). But for all those doomsday-ers who still want to stock up just in case, there are a few iodine pill manufacturers that are selling iodine pills you can get your hands on. A quick Google search of “iodine pills for sale” will pop up all sorts of sites where you can purchase iodine pills. However, be cautious when purchasing supplements like these. Some sources selling these pills do not provide a detailed list of what is actually in the pills. Additionally, your body may or may not need more iodine, so consulting with a doctor before purchasing and taking the pills is important. In case you didn’t know, we aren’t doctors, and this is not medical advice.
Likelihood of Nuclear Warfare
Even though the U.S. purchased Nplate pills in bulk, that doesn’t mean that any concerns should be raised. NBC News reported that Chris Meekins, a former deputy assistant secretary for preparedness and response at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said that the amount of pills bought (50,000 courses of Nplate) is significantly lower than what he expected it to be. He also said that the drug Nplate is not a practical drug to be used in the event of widespread nuclear exposure.
Russia and Ukraine
However, there’s still concern about the war between Russia and Ukraine. President Biden is concerned about nuclear warfare breaking out between Russia and Ukraine, and Putin threatened nuclear warfare multiple times as a method of winning this war. But even though Putin has threatened this, that doesn’t mean he’s actually done anything about it. There’s still no solid evidence to prove whether Putin has started his nuclear advances, but there’s still his overall character to consider with this. Additionally, there have also been rumors that Elon Musk is in contact with Putin. Reportedly, Musk denied Ukraine the use of Starlink because of Putin’s nuclear war threats. Regardless of all this hubbub over nuclear warfare, there really is no need to be concerned just yet. Though the rumors have been spreading, there isn’t any solid evidence to prove that any country has made the steps to start nuclear warfare. But, if you’re still concerned, now you at least know a little more about how iodine pills work. However, keep in mind the risks of those pills and how effective they actually are before buying in bulk. See more:Discover the E-4B Nightwatch: The USAF’s “Doomsday Plane”
