Is the 'Devotion' Movie Based on a True Story?

Yes, the Devotion movie coming to the big screen is based on a harrowing rescue mission and is a very real story. There's plenty of intrigue and action to boot, but the focus is on the ties between Tom Hudner and Jesse Brown, their legacy, and the incredible courage it takes to go above and beyond the call of duty.

What War Is the Movie 'Devotion' About?

The Devotion movie (2022) takes place during the Korean War. Specifically during events leading up to the war involving both the lives of Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner, as well as the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. The battle started when Chinese forces caught the US X Corps by surprise in the area. It was a terrible fight with freezing conditions that lasted 17 days. Roughly120,000 Chinese troops would fight 30,000 encircled U.N. Command troops. Eventually, this would lead to the retreat of the U.S. Eighth Army from northwest Korea, the evacuation of the X Corps, and would mark the complete withdrawal of U.N. forces from North Korean territory. Devotion explores a rescue mission that would occur as a result of the battle as *SPOILER ALERT* Tom Hudner tries to rescue Jesse Brown after he crash-lands miles behind Chinese enemy lines near Somong-ni.

Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner

This would be a great opportunity for us to point out what happens between both Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner. However, there’s a book and, now, a film that can do that for us. What’s important is that when you think of the movie Devotion, the key is in the title. Anyone who signs up and serves in the American Armed Forces is a hero. Putting your life and health on the line for our freedoms is admirable; this we know. But while it’s not about comparisons, some sacrifice more than others and go above and beyond. Both are true for these highly-decorated individuals. There are complex social dynamics at play here. Jesse Brown faced many obstacles as the first African-American aviator to complete the U.S. Navy's basic flight training program, and there's also the issue of military segregation between 1946 and 1950 that presented many challenges for the hero.
