Welcome to Marine Corps Air Station New River, the East Coast hub for Marine rotary-wing and tiltrotor aviation. The base is home to Marine Aircraft Group 29, Marine Aircraft Group 26, and other tenant units. MCAS New River provides support for the II Marine Expeditionary Force, and other military forces and tenant commands aboard Camp Lejeune.

MCAS New River is located in Jacksonville, NC, immediately adjacent to Camp Lejeune. These two installations are technically separate but are completely connected physically and are operationally entwined. This guide focuses primarily on the facilities located on MCAS New River. In some cases, similar facilities are available on Camp Lejeune with expanded hours or services. When this is the case, it will be noted in the guide below. Generally, the links provided will include information for facilities on both installations.

Additionally, a few facilities that are unique to Camp Lejeune are included for your reference, as you will have access to those facilities as well as the ones on MCAS New River.

Base Entry Procedures for MCAS New River

Whether you’re going to NCAS New River for a PCS, TAD/TDY, or just to visit, there is some key information you’ll need to know to ensure a smooth arrival.

Getting to MCAS New River From Nearby Cities

MCAS New River’s Main Gate is located off NC Route 17 in Jacksonville, NC. The first time you drive to MCAS New River, you will likely be approaching from either the north or south on NC-17.

Below are some major cities and associated airports that you might travel through, with some additional details.

Jacksonville, NC

MCAS New River’s main gate is about 10 minutes from downtown Jacksonville, North Carolina.

  • Albert J Ellis Airport: The main gate is approximately 25 minutes from Albert J. Ellis, a small regional airport in Jacksonville, NC. Most flights in and out of Ellis Airport have connections in Raleigh or Charlotte.
  • Jacksonville Station: Jacksonville Station is an Amtrak bus station located about 15 minutes from the Main Gate.

Wilmington, NC

Wilmington, NC, is the nearest major city south of Jacksonville on NC 17. It is about a 60 minute drive from Camp Lejeune.

Raleigh, NC

North Carolina’s Capitol, Raleigh, is about a two-hour drive from the main gate.

Charlotte is the furthest city you are likely to travel from, at just over four hours from Camp Lejeune.

Gates & Hours of Operation

MCAS New River has two entrance gates, and can also be accessed via Camp Lejeune, which has eight additional gates.

Main Gate (Curtis Rd.)

The main gate is on Curtis Rd. The gate is open 24 hours a day. The MCAS New River Visitor Control Center is located at the Main Gate and is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Douglass Gate

The Douglass Gate is located off NC 17, south of the Main Gate. It is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Want to Visit MCAS New River? Here’s How to Get Base Access

A REAL ID is the preferred form of identification required to access MCAS New River. Visitors must bring appropriate identifying documents to the MCAS New River Visitor Center to receive either a Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) credential or a paper pass.

Repeat visitors who have obtained a DBIDS card will use that to access MCAS New River.

What ID Do You Need For Base Access?

Accessing Camp Lejeune requires either a valid Military I.D. or a REAL ID with a DBIDS credential obtained at the Visitor Control Center. In lieu of a REAL ID, acceptable forms of identification include:

  • U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Card
  • Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Card
  • PIV-Interoperable Card
  • U.S. State Department Driver's License

Base Amenities & Facilities

As you get settled at MCAS New River, there are a number of key base facilities you should become familiar with.

Installation Personnel Admin Center (IPAC)

The Installation Personnel Admin Center (IPAC) will be the first stop for any Marine Corps personnel checking in to MCAS New River during normal working hours.

If reporting in after normal working hours, personnel must check in with the MCAS Command Duty Officer (located at Bldg. AS211, 1st Deck), then report to IPAC for check-in processing by 8 a.m. on the next business day.

ID Card Center (DEERS/RAPIDS)

The ID Card Center provides enrollment in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (for benefits access), issues Common Access Cards (CAC) and ID cards for active, reserve, and retired service members, service member families, and civilian and contractor employees.

Walk-in services are limited, so it is recommended to make an appointment in advance through the ID Card Center website.

MCAS New River Marine Centered Medical Homeport

MCAS New River Marine Centered Medical Homeport offers routine medical services to active duty on MCAS New River. For specialty care or care for dependents, facilities are available through Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune.

The Office of the Staff Judge Advocate provides a full range of legal services, as well as tax preparation support during tax season. For year-round tax support, servicemembers can access the Camp Lejeune Tax Center.

Marine Corps Exchange, Mini Marts, Gas, and Barbers

The MCX (or Main Exchange) is a one-stop shop for everything you might need from clothing to household goods, electronics, and more. Information below pertains to the New River MCX, although there is an additional MCX with expanded services aboard Camp Lejeune.

MCAS New River Dining Facility

MCAS New River has one mess hall open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

There are also a number of additional dining options on MCAS New River and Camp Lejeune offering both sit-down and quick service meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Dining options range from familiar chain restaurants, like Taco Bell and Subway, to local gems, like the breakfast and lunch spot Casita Loca.

Marine Corps Community Services at Camp Lejeune

Marine Corps Community Services offers a wide array of facilities and services to support Marines and their families stationed at MCAS New River. MCCS services for MCAS New River are managed jointly with Camp Lejeune.

Below, we focus primarily on the facilities located on New River. In some cases, similar facilities with additional services and hours are available at Camp Lejeune.

You will find those cases noted below, but Camp Lejeune facilities are not listed. In all cases, the links provided will take you to a shared website with information about facilities on both installations. Additionally, a few facilities that are unique to Camp Lejeune are included for your reference.

Library

The MCAS New River Library offers much more than just books! With a library card, you can access a wide array of digital resources, as well as DVDs, CD audiobooks, and even video games.

The library also provides access to computers and other technological equipment and offers a variety of programs for patrons of all ages. MCAS New River Personnel can also access three additional libraries on Camp Lejeune.

Not sure how to get a library card? It’s easy! Just stop by the library with your military or dependent ID.

Fitness Centers

There are two fitness centers aboard MCAS New River. Personnel aboard MCAS New River are also able to access additional fitness centers aboard Camp Lejeune, some of which have expanded hours for active duty.

New River Fitness Center

The New River Fitness Center is open to active-duty and dependents. In addition to standard gym equipment, the New River Fitness Center offers group classes and has a self-checkout micro-mart.

New River HIIT Center

The HIIT Center features high-intensity interval training sessions, nutrition classes, and sleep classes. It is available for active-duty personnel only.

Community Center

The MCCS Community Center on Camp Lejeune is a great place for active duty Marines and their families to go for some fun, rest, and relaxation. The Center provides access to computers, meeting spaces, a playground, a community garden, and more. It also regularly hosts special events and programs for all ages.

It is available for use by personnel on both Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River.

Movie Theater

Bowling

MCAS New River has its own bowling alley, New River Bowling Center.

The Bonnyman Bowling Center on Camp Lejeune is also available to personnel at MCAS New River, which is open on additional days and offers additional options like glow in the dark bowling.

Golf Course

MCAS New River does not have its own golf course, but personnel are welcome to golf at the Paradise Point Golf Course on Camp Lejeune.

Paradise Point features two separate 18-hole courses, as well as two driving ranges, three putting greens, and a practice field. Golf lessons from a PGA instructor are available, as well as a Pro Shop and snack bar.

Marina

Avid boaters and fishermen can take advantage of the New River Marina. The marina features multiple types of boat slips as well as dry storage. Rentals of both motorized and nonmotorized small watercraft are available at the marina.

Keep in mind that an annual fishing permit is required to fish on MCAS New River.

Pools

MCAS New River has one indoor pool located within the MCAS New River Fitness Center. However, additional pools are available on Camp Lejeune. See the MCCS website for details on other pools and restrictions for use.

Onslow Beach

For servicemembers and their families living on MCAS New River or in Jacksonville, NC, Onslow Beach is the closest beach access. Onslow Beach features a Marine Mart convenience store, pavilions with changing rooms, sports courts, and lifeguards on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day. There is also a dedicated dog beach at the southern end of Onslow Beach.

If you’re looking for a great staycation option, you can rent a vacation cottage at Onslow Beach. Pets are allowed, although they are subject to an additional fee and restrictions (including any breeds in violation of the Base Aggressive Breeds List, ferrets, insects, snakes, and any exotic animals).

Recreational Shooting

Personnel at MCAS New River can take advantage of the two recreational shooting ranges on Camp Lejeune. The McIntyre-Parks Recreational Shooting Complex offers archery and skeet shooting, including bow and shotgun rentals.

All ages are welcome to try archery at the range. Free basic shotgun safety and archery instruction by Certified Range Safety Officers is also available.

Skate Park

Personnel and their families stationed at MCAS New River can enjoy the MCCS Skate Park. The skate park features intermediate jumps, grinding rails, and two long runs starting and ending with either quarter pipe or half pipe platforms, and the region’s only super bowl platform. Skaters must be age 10 or older.

Sports

Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River have many great opportunities for athletes to keep playing the sports they love at all levels! Whether you’re looking for youth leagues or want to play yourself, there’s something for everyone.

Adult Sports

The Adult Sports program gives active duty, their family members, and DoD civilians the opportunity to get involved with team sports on base with a variety of season offerings.

Active duty servicemembers can participate in intramural sports as part of a designated unit team. Non-intramural leagues are open to active duty, retirees, and dependents over the age of 18. Tournaments are also offered throughout the year. See the Adults Sports Program website for up-to-date information on current offerings.

All Marine-Sports

Elite Marine athletes have the opportunity to compete at a higher level in the All-Marine Sports. This program gives Marines the opportunity to compete at a higher level in competitions like the Armed Forces Championships, National Championships, Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) Championships, and even the Olympics. Those interested must complete an application and a standard fitness test. Opportunities are also available for coaching.

Youth Sports

MCCS on MCAS New River and Camp Lejeune also provides plenty of opportunities for youth athletics! The Youth Sports program is open to all dependents of Active Duty, Reservists, Retired military, and DOD-employed civilians associated with MCAS New River. Ages for participation vary by sport.

Inline Hockey

MCAS New River’s Inline Hockey Rink is a real treat for anyone who loves to get out on the ice. Adult leagues are held in the fall and spring, and adult pick up games are available year round. Youth pick up games are also available once a week.

Auto Skills Center

Servicemembers aboard MCAS New River have access to the Camp Lejeune Auto Skills Center. The Auto Skills Center is your go-to location for anything vehicle maintenance on base. Expert technicians are available to do multiple kinds of maintenance and repairs.

The Auto Skills Center also offers classes in vehicle maintenance and repairs, and has some common supplies you might need available for sale. Family Support Services

MCCS also coordinates a number of family support services aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River and Camp Lejeune.

The Exceptional Family Member Program supports military families with members who have special needs including, but not limited to, requiring any kind of specialty medical care or doctors and/or any type of educational support services for six months or more.

On-Base Housing

For families seeking on-base housing, MCAS New River has two small housing communities available on base.

All military housing aboard MCAS New River is managed privately by Hunt Military Communities.

On-Base Housing Pet Policy

Each home may have a maximum of two pets, subject to restrictions. Dogs, cats, tropical fish, guinea pigs, white mice, gerbils, and caged birds are the only pets authorized in family housing.

Restricted dog breeds include: Pit Bull Terriers (American/English Staffordshire Bull Terrier), Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Chows, and Canid/Wolf Hybrids or any mixes of those breeds.

Owners will be asked to verify that their animal is not aggressive. All pets (including dogs, cats, and horses) must be registered with the Domestic Animal Control Office (DACO) on Camp Lejeune.

Off-Base Housing

Housing referral services are available through the Military Housing Office.

MCAS New River Schools and Child Care Options

Families stationed at Camp Lejeune have quite a few options when it comes to choosing a school for their children, whether they choose to stick with base schools or to take advantage of the public or private schools in the surrounding counties.

Base Schools (K-12)

Base schools on MCAS New River are part of the Camp Lejeune Schools Community. Students attend elementary school at MCAS New River before attending middle and high school on Camp Lejeune.

DeLalio Elementary School

DeLalio Elementary School serves between 100 and 150 students in pre-k through 5th grade who live on MCAS New River. DeLalio Elementary is by far the smallest elementary school amongst local public schools on and off base.

Brewster Middle School

All MCAS New River students attend Brewster Middle School for 6th through 8th grades. Brewster Middle School hosts just over 450 students. This is a smaller student body compared to off-base schools in the area, which may be preferential for some students.

Lejeune High School

Lejeune High School is attended by 400-450 students whose families are stationed at Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River. Lejeune High School has a significantly smaller student body compared to off-base schools in the area, which may be preferential for some students.

Off-Base Schools (K-12)

For parents considering off-base schools, there is no shortage of options near MCAS New River. North Carolina school districts are managed at the county level, with sub-districts each containing one high school and a varying number of elementary and middle schools based on population.

Sub-district attendance is based on home address. Parents can compare local public school districts using the North Carolina School Report Card database.

Onslow County Schools

Onslow County Schools oversees 7 subdistricts with a total of 39 schools across Onslow County. Onslow County has above-average attendance numbers across all levels of the school system (average of 562 students per elementary school, 768 students per middle school, and 974 students per high school). The majority of schools in Onslow County receive a B rating, with some receiving C or D ratings. Across the board, Onslow County high schools tend to be higher rated than their elementary and middle schools.

Onslow County Schools does offer one notable and highly-rated program for high school students: the Onslow Early College High School. This high school is a joint venture between Onslow County Schools and Coastal Carolina Community College. Students at this school typically take a mix of high school and college courses beginning in their freshman year.

By the end of sophomore year, most have completed all of their necessary high school credits and go on to take all college courses for junior and senior year. This gives students the opportunity to graduate with both a high school diploma and an Associate’s degree from the community college. Students attend classes at Coastal Carolina Community College in Jacksonville.

Pender County Schools

Pender County Schools is a smaller district, serving about 12,000 students across 19 schools. Most of the schools in Pender County receive a B or C rating, with Topsail sub-district schools consistently receiving the highest ratings across grade levels.

Much like Onslow County, the highest-rated school in Pender County is the Pender Early College High School, which is a joint venture between Pender County Schools and Cape Fear Community College. Students in this program attend classes at the college, which is located in Burgaw, NC.

Duplin County Schools

Duplin County Schools includes a total of 13 schools with a combined student population of about 9,500. Duplin County schools are mostly rated D, with some receiving an F rating.

Duplin County does have an Early College High School, but it is lower rated than those in other local counties.

Child Care Options

For families with children that are not yet school-aged, or who require child care for older children outside of school hours, MCAS New River offers multiple support options.

Child Development Centers

MCAS New River has two Child Development Centers where you can enroll your child aged 6 weeks to five years old.

CDC’s provide a structured curriculum for your child that will support their development from infancy through their toddler years as they grow old enough to begin school. Both CDC’s aboard MCAS New River are open from 6:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays.

Family Child Care

If you are seeking a more flexible childcare option for children up to the age of 12, the Family Child Care program can match you with a qualified childcare professional to provide childcare services at your home.

School Age Care

The School Age Care program is intended for children ages 5-12 who are currently enrolled in school. This program provides before and after-school care, as well as childcare during school breaks and summer camps.

Transportation is available to and from base schools and some off-base schools. Like the CDCs, School Age Care centers are typically open on weekdays from 6:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Families stationed at MCAS New River have access to two School Age Care centers on Camp Lejeune.

Marine Corps Community Services

There are many opportunities available across the variety of offices and facilities within MCCS, including Marine Corps Exchanges. Enjoy Your Time at MCAS New River

If your next duty station is MCAS New River, you’re in for a treat. MCAS New River is a small, tight-knit community, especially compared to its much larger neighbor, Camp Lejeune.

However, easy access to Camp Lejeune means you get the small-town feel with the amenities of a much larger community. There’s also a lot to enjoy off-base in the surrounding communities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I live on MCAS New River without children?

Active-duty with dependents (spouses or children) are permitted to live in base housing. For more information, contact the Military Housing Office.

Can I live on MCAS New River if I'm not married?

Single Marines at the E-5 rank and below are required to live in assigned barracks.

Depending on availability, there may also be a limited number of Bachelor Officer Quarters and SNCO Bachelor Quarters available. For more information call MCAS New River Bachelor Quarters at (910) 787-9575.

Is MCAS New River hands-free?

Yes, all drivers are required to use hands-free devices while simultaneously operating a cell phone and a vehicle on base.

Is there a veterinary clinic on base?

No, but servicemembers have access to the Camp Lejeune Veterinary Treatment Facility (VTF), which offers veterinary services to privately-owned animals.

Are there breed restrictions at MCAS New River?

Yes, on-base housing at MCAS New River restricts certain breeds, including Pit Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, and Wolf Hybrid. Contact the housing office or review your lease addendum for the full restricted breeds list.

Can I bring my horse with me to MCAS New River?

Yes! While MCAS New River does not have appropriate facilities, Camp Lejeune is one of the rare USMC bases to have a stable! The Scarlet and Gold Riding Club is a 501(c)3 organization that privately manages a self-board boarding facility on base. Service members stationed at MCAS New River can access this facility.

Is there a public beach at MCAS New River?

No, MCAS New River does not have direct access to the beach, but it is very close to Onslow Beach on Camp Lejeune. This is the nearest beach access for most of Jacksonville, NC.

Does TRICARE cover local medical providers?

Yes, many local providers in Jacksonville, NC, and greater Onslow County accept Tricare Select.

Can I hunt and/or fish at MCAS New River?

Yes, hunting, trapping, fishing, and other related activities are all allowed in designated areas on Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River with appropriate permits. See the Camp Lejeune Environmental Conservation Branch website for more information and to obtain permits.
