Who Is the Largest Employer in the World?

While looking for the largest employer in the world, the answer might shock you. No, it’s not some megastore conglomerate or fast food chain, but rather the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). Upon closer inspection, however, this makes a lot of sense on many levels. For starters, American interests are far greater than the 50 states represented by the stars on Old Glory, and keeping Americans safe around the world takes quite an effort. When you throw in the assistance we provide our allies, it’s no wonder that it takes give or take 3 million people in total to make it happen. Learn more about the biggest employer in the world, what it's like to work there, and some of the complexities that come with a usual workplace. How the DoD Earned the Title "Largest Employer in the World"

What career area is the largest employer in the world? It’s easy to think that workers of the DoD are all U.S. troops, but it’s a disservice to the many civilian workers helping those serving do so properly to assume as much. Together, these millions of workers help make the U.S. military operate as the greatest fighting force in the world. Within the military, there are over 800 jobs available. For civilian workers, there are as many around 675 positions in need of workers. Everyone from fighters on the frontlines to veterinarians are needed. Especially when you're dealing with the complexities found in the military, the positions necessary come from a wide range of industries. Here are some other common examples:

  • Accountants.
  • Chaplains.
  • Combat Speciality Personnel.
  • Electricians.
  • Engineers.
  • Food Service Workers.
  • General Administrative Positions.
  • Healthcare Personnel.
  • Human Resources.
  • IT Specialists.
  • Logistics.
  • Pilots.
  • Procurement Specialists.
  • Social Workers.
  • Technicians.
  • And much, much more.

Because the DoD is the largest employer in the world, it not only has to make sure that America is properly defended but also that its employees are, as well. It’s an interesting balancing act, but together, the various cogs in the machine work a system that keeps America free.

Workplace Issues and Defending America

U.S. Department of Defense reviews show that 81% of DoD workers approve of their workplace, but just like any place of employment, issues can arise. The DoD is the largest employer in the U.S., but it’s also a part of the government. This can mean navigating tricky legal, social, and political issues. Here are a few examples:

As laws change, especially considering the wide reach of the DoD, there can be discrepancies in how they're applied. Obviously, because the DoD leads the list of the world’s largest employers and is a government entity, eyes are constantly on it. Again, workers overwhelmingly approve, but there are times throughout history when the DoD has to play a bit of catch-up. Fortunately, laws are followed, and as a whole, the organization works to maintain a fair, legal work environment for all.

Which Company Is the Largest Private Employer in the World?

Walmart continues to be the largest private employer in the world, even as the Internet and other opportunities provide relative newcomers such as Amazon to rise up. Some of the other largest employers in the U.S. also bring us familiar names. After Walmart, here are the private companies ranked by number of employees:

  1. United Parcel Service (UPS).
  2. Kroger.
  3. Home Depot.
  4. Target.
  5. Starbucks.
  6. Berkshire Hathaway.
  7. UnitedHealth.
  8. FedEx Corporation.

However, despite all of these prominent names, the DoD continues to be the overall largest employer in the world. It’s a good thing, too. America has millions of people who are helping keep the U.S. military running and Americans safer in the process.
