The Mosquito Bowl and the ‘barbaric madness’ of the Pacific War

The upcoming film "The Mosquito Bowl," directed by Peter Berg, adapts Buzz Bissinger’s 2022 book about four college football stars who left the gridiron to fight with the Marines in the Pacific theater of World War II. Despite its title—referencing an actual football game played by the troops on Guadalcanal—Berg emphasizes that this is not a traditional sports movie, but rather an intense, immersive war film designed to capture the "barbaric madness" and inescapable violence the men faced in combat, particularly on Okinawa.
Both Berg and Bissinger brought personal connections to the project, as both of their fathers served as Marines during the war. By stripping away any Hollywood sugarcoating, the filmmakers hope to honor those who fought while offering a visceral, unsanitized look at the brutal realities of the conflict. The movie hits theaters on October 30 before premiering on Netflix in late November.
